The entrants were dressed to the nines, over a hundred supporters were on hand and seven entrants made history Friday night in DeKalb County's first ever special needs pageant.
There were lots tears and lots of laughter Friday night as six young ladies and one young gent took to the stage at the DeKalb County Complex.
A packed house shook black and gold pom pom as each participant took to the stage. Pom Poms took the place of yelling, cheering loudly and clapping as most with special needs have sensory issues with loud, sudden noises.
The event hosted by the Last Minute Toy Shop was a huge success, and all of the children seemed to have a wonderful time.
"I am overjoyed at how this turned out and how the community came out to support these kids," said Angie Meadows with the LMTS.
"They cannot participate in sports and all of the things other kids do, so we want to hold this event every year just for them. It can be something they and their parents can look forward to. We hope to see if grow each year, possibly opening it to surrounding counties."
As a non-compete event, each girl received a tiara, queen sash, and bouquet, while the young man received a trophy and king sash.
Each child received a good bag filled to the brim which included a sunshine t-shirt, donations of a cup with straw, sensory toys, gift certificates and gift cards for Walmart, McDonalds, Smithville Donut, Papa John’s Pizza, Dairy Queen, Patty's Restaurant, animal cookies and a drink donated by Food Lion. Each also received a personal dessert made and donated by Bethany Satterfield.
Chase Collins with the Vintage Owl provided the stage decor and bouquets.
Next year's event will boast the new name of the Sunshine Celebration, and is already in the planning stages.
