County Makes Changes to Local Roads
County Commission
The DeKalb County Commission met in its regular July meeting at the county complex and passed Rule 17, with an amendment, of the county’s new Rules & Procedures.

The DeKalb County Commission voted last week to reduce the posted speed limit on Big Hurricane Road to 30 miles per hour. The move came after a motion was made by Fourth District Commissioner Dr. Scott Little, who said residents in the area had requested the change.

The commission also made a name change to one county road, to help differentiate two roads with the same name that are now split by the lake. Allen Ferry Road runs between Highways 70 and 56 in the Smithville area, while the other section runs off of Backbone Road in the Johnson’s Chapel Community.

Fifth District Commissioner Jerry Adcock made a motion that one of the roads be renamed to alleviate confusion. He had consulted DeKalb E-911 Director Brad Mulllinax about the matter, who then contacted County Mayor Tim Stribling. The commission then voted to rename the Johnson’s Chapel section of road as “Old Allen Ferry Road” since that stretch of roadway has fewer households.

The commission also granted a request from Director Mullinax to name a current private drive between Liberty and Alexandria to Adamson Lane. The property owner, Don Adamson, has rented property to the road construction company working on Highway 70, and requested the lane be named because three mobile home units will be placed on the property to be used by the construction crew.
