Veterans Day Program, cancelled

The annual Veterans Day Program at Smithville Elementary School has been cancelled this year due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic. Although the faculty, staff and students are very disappointed to cancel the program, the health and safety of everyone involved takes precedence. It is our sincere hope that we will be able to resume the program in 2021. Smithville elementary would like to express their deepest appreciation and admiration to all veterans, and thank them for their sacrifice, their bravery, and the example they set for us all.

 

Driver’s License Checkpoint, Oct. 30

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting a driver license checkpoint October 30, 2020 on Highway 56 in DeKalb County. Impaired driving is a serious crime that kills more than 16,000 people and injures 3065,000 others every year in the United States. Troopers will evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Troopers will target those who operate a vehicle while impaired and take corrective actions for others violations observed while ensuring the protection of all motorists. The Tennessee Highway Patrol recognizes that sobriety checkpoints ae highly visible and effective tools in the battle against impaired driving.

 

Downtown Smithville Boo Bash, Oct. 30

Smithville Boo Bash starts at 12 pm to 5 pm on Friday, October 30th. Downtown stores with a pumpkin on their door are the ones participating. Also during the Smithville Halloween Boo Bash, the Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber will be sponsoring the Best Costume Contest and Best Decorations for participating Smithville business and offices! To enter take a picture with your cell phone and send it to 615-464-7760 by 1 p.m. on Friday, October 30th. Winners will be presented a Boo Bash Best Costume or Best Decoration award, local media and social media recognition, winner announcements on November Chamber Chat Radio and DTC TV program, and most important bragging rights.

 

Food Distribution, Oct. 31

Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church will hold a Mobile Food Pantry rain or shine on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at 9 a.m. All vehicles will line up facing North across from the church. Please only 2 households maximum per vehicle.

 

L.B.J. & C. Meeting, Nov. 3

The monthly meeting of the L.B.J. & C. Head Start Policy Council has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2020 beginning at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the L.B.J. & C. Development Corporation, 1150 Chocolate Drive, Cookeville, Tennessee.

4-H Honor Meeting, Nov. 5

The 4-H Honor Club meeting will be Thursday, November 5, 2020 at 3:15-4:30 p.m. at the UT/TSU Extension Office. All 7th-12th grades are invited. Call 615-597-4945 for more information.

Blood Drive, Nov. 9

DeKalb Neighbors Helping Neighbors will be having a blood drive on Monday, November 9, 2020 the Blood Mobile will be in the parking lot at the DeKalb Community Complex. Annual Pecan Sale, Nov. 9

It’s that time of the year and Smithville Lions Club is selling the delicious Mammoth (halves) pecans. A 1lb bag is only $10. Flu Clinic, Nov. 10

DeKalb Coumty Health Department will be doing a drive thru clinic on Tuesday, November 10, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Flu vaccines are free!

 

4 H Homeschooling Meeting, Nov. 11

This meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 10:00 -11:00 a.m. at the UT/TSU Extension Office. All 4th-8th graders are invited. Call 615-597-4945 for more information.

 

Fall Church Bazaar, Nov. 7

The United Methodist Women’s group of Smithville First United Methodist Church is optimistically planning a Fall Craft Bazaar for Friday, November 6 and Saturday November 7 at their Christian Fellowship Center, located at 102 West Church Street. We will be open Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. We will have baked goods, food items, canned goods, and hand crafted items. Lunch will be served on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 12 noon. The menu will consist of homemade soups, grilled cheese sandwiches, pimento cheese sandwiches, hot dog and chips, desserts, coffee and drinks. Proceeds will be used for donations to local community causes. We intend to follow Social Distancing guide lines, wearing a mask is appreciated for everyone’s safety. Food handlers will wear masks and gloves during food preparations. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Miss Volunteer State Benefit Pageant, Nov. 7

An official Tennessee Festival Prelim. All winners go on to compete for the title of Miss Tennessee at Tennessee Festivals State Pageant. All ages welcome with divisions for all. It begins at 12 noon. This will be held at the DeKalb County Community Complex. Doug Barnes is a fun loving, hardworking and determined man. A son, husband, father of three, and dedicated member of the community. He suffered a life changing accident but will not let it get the best of him. Together let us help him and his family in recovering and steadying the foundation of their future. Join us for a pageant, 20 + vendors, silent auction, BBQ lunch with proceeds going to the family in their trying times. Vendors, lunch and silent auction starting at 11 a.m. with vendors closing at 5p.m. Silent auction will end at 6 p.m.

DeKalb County Angel Tree Project Signups

The 26th Annual DeKalb County Angel Tree Project signups are coming soon. However, due to COVID 19, the application pick up location and process will be different. Monday, November 2nd and Tuesday, November 3rd are the only two dates that applications will be made available. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. Times will be from 8:00 am until 7:00 pm at the First Baptist Church Life Enrichment Center under the carport.

Applicants must be DeKalb County residents and children from birth to no older than age 12 by December 25, 2020 are eligible. You must bring photo identification and a bill with the correct current DeKalb County address of the person applying. You must also provide social security cards and birth certificates (Mother’s copy is okay) for all children listed on the application.

Guardian paperwork for temporarily placed children is acceptable. Documents are returned to the applicant, only the application is kept. Please make sure you fill out the application as completely and accurately as possible. If an applicant cannot appear in person, their application can be submitted by someone else as long as all of the required information and documentation is presented. Come prepared with all of the necessary documentation to complete your application and return it for review between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm on November 2nd or November 3rd. NO EXCEPTIONS. DeKalb County Health Department Administering Drive Through Flu Shots

The DeKalb County Health Department is administering drive through flu shots Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. All flu vaccines are FREE!
