On December 21, 58-year-old Howard Robert Mayo, Jr. of Liberty was arrested for simple possession of a schedule VI drug and possession of methamphetamine with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver. He is under a $56,500 bond and appeared in court on January 9.
DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray said a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a silver Ford F150 driven by Mayo. Upon speaking with Mayo, the odor of marijuana was detected from the vehicle.
The officer asked Mayo to step out of the vehicle and a search revealed 3.76 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in the driver door panel.
The deputy had prior knowledge that Mayo often kept narcotics in his wallet; the deputy asked to see it. Found inside the wallet were 1.12 grams of a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine.
When asked for his driver license, Mayo revealed an ID-only license. A background check through central dispatch revealed Mayo’s driver license was revoked due to a DUI on September 21, 2001, in Cannon County.
That same day, 55-year-old Jeffery Lee Bates of Old West Point Road was arrested for public intoxication. He is under a $3,000 bond and appeared in court January 9.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy was dispatched to the intersection of Old West Point Road and Maynard Road on a report of a man lying in a ditch. Upon arrival the deputy found the man, Bates passed out. The man reportedly had an odor of alcohol and when awakened became unsteady on his feet.
On December 22, 22-year-old Peyton Eugene Hollingsworth of Main Street, Dowelltown, was arrested for driving under the influence. His bond is $1,500 and he will be in court January 16.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy observed a black Toyota pickup fail to maintain its lane of travel. He conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Hollingsworth, who had a strong odor of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet, and had bloodshot and watery eyes.
The man allegedly admitted to consuming a few beers. Hollingsworth submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tasks.
That same day, 27-year-old Brandon Ezequiel Cotuc of Bradley Drive, Cookeville, was arrested for driving under the influence and no driver license. His court date is January 16.
At around 3:32 a.m., a deputy was patrolling Sparta Highway when he observed a gray Honda Accord fail to maintain its lane of travel. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and spoke to the driver, Cotuc, whose eyes were watery and bloodshot.
The deputy asked Cotuc to step out of the vehicle. He submitted to a field sobriety task, but after performing poorly on one task, he refused to undergo any further tasks. He was then placed in custody.
On December 23, 43-year-old Shane Curtis Gardner of Sparta Highway was arrested for aggravated assault and interference with emergency calls. He is under a $12,500 bond and he was in court January 9.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy was dispatched to Sparta Highway on a report of an aggravated assault complaint from the day before. Gardner allegedly tried to strangle a female victim, who was found to have red marks on her face and the side of her neck, bite marks on her body, and she had bruising to both of her eyes. Gardner had also allegedly taken the woman’s phone to prevent her from calling 911 during the assault.
On December 26, 41-year-old Thomas Jacob Sims was arrested for being a fugitive from justice. He is under a $50,000 bond and he appeared in court January 9.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy went to E.H. Haas Road to serve Sims an active parole warrant out of Georgia. Georgia authorities confirmed through NCIC that they would extradite.
That same day, 21-year-old John Isaac Brinkley of Old Columbia Road, Lewisburg, was arrested for aggravated assault. He is under a $5,000 bond and was in court January 9.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy responded to Toad Road due to an assault involving a gun. The deputy made contact with a male who advised that he and Brinkley had gotten into an argument. Brinkley allegedly spat in his face, then allegedly picked up a chainsaw and came toward him with it, placing him in fear of bodily injury.
On December 28, 48-year-old James Walter Stringer of West Main Street, Dowelltown, was arrested for aggravated assault. His bond is $20,000.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy responded to West Main Street in Dowelltown in reference to an unwanted guest. The deputy made contact with a female who stated that Stringer had rammed his truck into the back of her car, causing damage to the driver side rear bumper and placing her in fear for her life. Stringer had gone back into his house before law enforcement arrived, and later told the deputy that he had been there asleep the whole time.
On December 30, Stringer arrested again for violation of the sex offender registry. His bond is $5,000 and he will be in court on January 16. The warrant against Stringer was obtained on December 30.
Sheriff Ray said that on October 4 a detective was notified that Stringer had been operating a social media account that he had not listed in the sex offender registry. After reviewing the account, the detective was able to positively identify Stringer by the tattoos he has listed in the booking system at the jail and through prior law enforcement encounters with Stringer.
Also on December 28, 62-year-old Lorenzo Hernandez of West Main Street, Dowelltown, was arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon and aggravated assault. He is under a $40,000 bond and was in court on January 9.
Sheriff Ray said that Hernandez allegedly attempted to strangle his daughter, causing her to have trouble breathing, and pointed a firearm at her, allegedly stating, “You are going to die today.”
The gun used in the incident was later located in the lint compartment of a dryer. A background check revealed that Hernandez is a convicted felon in Florida on burglary, third-degree felony and larceny charges. His conviction date was March 12, 1993.
On January 1, 43-year-old Randy Mark Hawkins, Jr. of Cecil Hale Road, Smithville, was arrested for driving under the influence. He is under a $2,500 bond and he will be in court January 16.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy observed a gray Ford F150 fail to maintain its lane of travel heading outbound on South Mountain Street, Smithville. Upon activating his blue lights, the vehicle continued a “slow roll” and swerved side to side in the lane.
After a traffic stop, the deputy spoke with the driver, Hawkins, who had an odor of alcohol and bloodshot watery eyes. His speech was also slow and slurred. Hawkins allegedly stated that he had been drinking over the past few hours. After getting out of the truck, Hawkins became unsteady on his feet. He submitted to, but performed poorly on, field sobriety tasks.
Also, that day, 41-year-old Amber Nicole Macleod of Scoville Lane, Springhill, was arrested for aggravated assault. Her bond is $10,000.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy responded to Mullican Lane due to report of a break-in in progress. Upon arrival the deputy made contact with a man who had been stabbed. The man advised that Macleod had stabbed him over an argument regarding a cell phone. The man had a cut to his upper right arm, near his shoulder, and a cut to his left-hand ring finger.
On January 3, 37-year-old Landon Craig Wyatt, Jr. of Crestlawn Avenue, Smithville, was arrested for bringing contraband into a penal institution. His bond is $7,500 and he will be in court January 16.
Sheriff Ray said that on December 31 Wyatt brought a pair of white thermals to the jail dropping them off for an inmate currently incarcerated. A correctional officer found inside the waistband of the thermals behind the tag what was believed to be buprenorphine strips.
