The inaugural Festival of Trees began Monday night at the County Complex as scores of people showed up to judge trees, make donations to a good cause and enjoy cookies and punch. In the end, the event raised over 1,200 toys for the needy.

"Everybody that comes gets to be a judge," said Complex Director Josh Issac who was pleased by the turnout through the week. "And, by putting a toy under the tree, you pick the tree of the year."

There are 39 entries. The toys that are donated will go to the foster care system in DeKalb County.

Winners were announced this past Saturday with the overall winner being Outreach Baptist Church for most toys raised. They were joined in the 50-plus toys raised by the office of Dr. Cliff Duke, Town & Lake Realty, Smithville Assembly of God, Middle Tennessee Tae Kwon Do and Creations by Donna. Creations by Donna was also voted prettiest tree.
