The Smithville Fire Department battled a large house fire last Thursday afternoon that destroyed a local home, garage, and other structures.

According to Smithville Fire Chief Charlie Parker, At 4:15 p.m. E-911 dispatchers received a call reporting a house fire at the home of Roger Tramel at 702 Cill Street. Fire crews with Smithville Fire, a unit with DeKalb EMS, officers with the Smithville Police Department and deputies with the DeKalb Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene, along with the Rescue Squad’s Rehab Truck.

Upon arrival, fire crews found the home and several buildings around the home, fully engulfed in flames. Several vehicles were also ablaze, adding to the fire. Thick black smoke could be seen across the county, and several explosions rocked the neighborhood. Fire officials say several propane tanks burned, and tires and the airbag system in one of the vehicles exploded.

Fire crews worked to contain the fire, and keep it from spreading to other nearby homes. Despite their efforts, the house and all of its contents were a total loss. Authorities say no one was injured in the blaze, but a small dog was killed in the incident.

Along with the house, a carport, greenhouse, lawnmower, and Chevy Silverado pickup were also destroyed, and a pontoon boat was damaged.

A garage located behind the home, belonging to Danny Adams was also destroyed by the fire. Authorities say that a boat, a vehicle, and a set of brand new kitchen cabinets were burned inside the garage.

Members of the local American Red Cross responded to help the victims of the fire. Authorities say the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
