The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department made several arrests over the past week, including a man accused of stealing from local students and athletes, and many involved in a jailhouse beating.

On October 24, 37-year-old Daniel Ray Wilson of Yolanda Hill Road, Smithville was arrested for burglary and theft of property after he allegedly broke into a school building and made away with some sporting equipment.

According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, on October 4, Wilson entered the DeKalb County High School Girls’ softball concession stand locker room, located on West Broad Street in Smithville, with the intent to deprive the DeKalb County School softball team, numerous student athletes, and parents of numerous items with a value of totaling $4,561. Ray said that bats, ball gloves, helmets, fielding masks, ballbags, and numerous other items were taken in the crime. No damage was done to the building.

Wilson is under a $27,500 bond and is due in court on November 18.

Several men at the DeKalb County Jail are facing charges after two incidents of violence. Sheriff Ray said that 44-year-old Jermaine Derperise McCoy of Smith Road, Smithville, 30-year-old Jerimiah Daniel Martin of Martin Lane, Smithville, and 27-year-old Ronald Deshon Reeder of Smith Road, Smithville, are each charged with assault in the case. Each man is under a $5,000 bond and are set to appear in court on November 18.

Sheriff Ray said that on October 22, 2021, at approximately 11:10 am, a correctional officer was bringing inmates to the jail. As the officer was walking through the Annex hallway, there was a loud bang on the Annex door. The officer opened the window flap on the door and an inmate was pointing towards the opposite side of the Annex. The correctional officer could not tell what was happening, but a deputy and another correctional officer came in and said that another inmate was being assaulted.

The deputy and officers entered the annex and found an inmate struggling to stand against a wall, with multiple inmates yelling at the inmate. After reviewing camera footage, correctional officers deemed McCoy, Martin, and Reeder were involved in the assault, striking and kicking the inmate multiple times.

Just a few minutes later another assault took place in the jail. Sheriff Ray said that 40-year-old Michael Chad Owens of Shady Drive, Smithville, faces an assault charge for that offense.

At approximately 11:49 am, a correctional officer was passing out lunch at the Annex door when an officer noticed the inmates had formed a circle inside the cell and had ceased receiving their trays. The officer entered the cell where he found an inmate bleeding from his mouth, nose, and elbow, while Owens was yelling at the inmate.

After reviewing security footage, it was deemed that Owens was the aggressor and had struck the inmate multiple times.  He is under a $5,000 bond and is set to appear in court on November 18.

In other Sheriff’s news, 40-year-old Shana Jean Shahan of Rocky Branch Road, Watertown, was arrested on October 16, for public intoxication. She is due in court November 4.

Sheriff Ray said that a deputy responded to Alexandria Town Square for a call for an unwanted guest. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Shahan, who authorities say appeared to be under the influence. She was reportedly being irate and yelling at the public, and was a danger to herself and the public.

On October 21, 41-year-old Stephanie Rose Rodriguez of Ester Avenue, Nashville, was arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant. She is under a $50,000 bond and is set to appear in court on November 4.

According to Sheriff Ray, Rodriguez was released from the DeKalb County Jail, and upon her release a National Crime Information check came back showing that she was wanted out of the State of Mississippi to serve the remainder of a 10-year sentence. Mississippi advised that they would extradite Rodriguez.

The following day, 22-year-old Skylar James Pease of Edison Street, McMinnville, was charged with manufacture deliver sell or possess of a schedule VI drug, marijuana. He is under a $5,000 bond and he is due in court on November 4.

Authorities say that a deputy made contact with Pease passed out at the Dollar General Store in Alexandria. Upon speaking with the man, the deputy detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted and 96 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana was discovered.

That same day, 23-year-old Robert Wayne Porter of Midway Road, Smithville, was arrested for a violation of an order of protection. He is under a $2,500 bond and he is due in court on November 18.

A deputy was investigating a call on Midway Road when a Jeep Cherokee pulled into Page Drive with an argument taking place. When the deputy approached the vehicle he found Porter and a female. The deputy had prior knowledge of a possible active order of protection. He detained the man and verified that the order was active. He was placed in custody.

Also that day, 43-year-old James Frederick Summers of Rayburn Walling Road, Rock Island, was charged with a variety of different charges. He is under a $11,000 total bond and due in court on November 18.

Summers is charged with possession of a schedule II drug methamphetamine, simple possession of a schedule III drug suboxone, prohibited weapon (brass knuckles), altering, falsifying or forging of a title, and driving on revoked fourth offense.

Sheriff Ray said that a deputy with prior knowledge of Summers having a revoked driver’s license performed a traffic stop on the man as he was riding a motorcycle. During the stop, he was found to be in possession of what appeared to be meth, as well as having four orange pills believed to be suboxone.

Also, a check on the motorcycle registration revealed the tag to be not on file. Someone had also allegedly drawn in the year “2022” on the plate. Summers was placed in custody.

On October 25, 33-year-old Kimberly Ann Blanchfield of Nashville Highway, Dowelltown, was charged for a violation of bond conditions. She is under a $5,000 bond and she is due in court on November 4.

A deputy responded to Nashville Highway on a call on an unwanted guest. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Blanchfield, whom authorities say was talking out of her head and appeared to be under the influence. While speaking to the deputy, Blanchfield allegedly picked up an alcoholic beverage. Having prior knowledge that Blanchfield had an active bond condition which states she cannot have alcohol, she was placed under arrest. 

On October 28, 39-year-old Michael Eugene Lattimore of Oak Street, Smithville, was arrested as a fugitive from justice. He is under a $50,000 bond and he is due in court on November 18.

According to Sheriff Ray, while incarcerated at the Sheriff’s Department, Lattimore was found to have an active warrant for his arrest out of Columbia County, Florida, for charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle, with nationwide extradition confirmed.

On October 30, 45-year-old Scott Cory Harris of Possum Hollow Road, Smithville, was charged with aggravated assault after a deputy responded to a stabbing at the local ER. He is under a $10,000 bond and he is due in court of November 11.

On October 29, a deputy responded to a possible stabbing at the emergency room. After speaking to multiple witnesses it was determined that Harris stabbed a person in the right arm with a sharpened leather punch. He was placed under arrest.
