Man Charged After Body Found in Yard
William McKenzie

Chief Deputy Brian Williams said on Thursday, August 29, at 6:54 p.m., Central Dispatch received a call of a possible shooting at 163 Streamer Drive, in the Four Seasons area of the county.

The Dekalb County Sheriff’s Department arrived on scene at 7:05 p.m. and made contact with 66-year-old William Anthony Mckenzie of Streamer Drive, and found a deceased male laying in the yard, identified as 39-year-old Earl Craig Asberry Jr. of Smithville.

The warrant against McKenzie states that, “McKenzie, by his own admission, did intentionally and knowingly discharge a firearm striking the victim, Asberry, multiple times in the torso area, resulting in his death.”

Prior to the arrival of law enforcement, the investigation revealed that McKenzie allegedly made several attempts to hide the body, as well as making comments of removing the body from the scene.

The suspect, Mckenzie, has been booked into the DeKalb County Jail and is charged with second degree murder. He is under a $500,000 dollar bond and will appear in the General Sessions Court in DeKalb County on Thursday September 12.

Upon the request of Sheriff Patrick R. Ray, the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Generals Office summoned the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to the scene of the crime. Also on scene were Sheriff Patrick R. Ray, Chief Deputy Brian Williams, Dekalb County Sheriff Deputies, Dekalb County Sheriff’s Detectives, Dekalb County Medical Examiner’s Office and ADA Greg Strong.

The investigation is still on going.
