A man who cut the trunk from a car to steal the jack so he could steal the catalytic converter made a run for it but was caught in just a short time.
Jeffery Lynn Sanders, 47, of Smithville was arrested Feb. 14 and charged with theft of property and vandalism over $1,000.
Sanders used a saw to cut the trunk lid off of a vehicle to obtain a jack in order to jack up another vehicle to steal the converters from it. One converter has been cut off completely and another cut but not completely from the vehicle. When Sanders was confronted by the owner, he took off running with a backpack which contained one of the converters. He was found shortly in a tree-line laying down. His bond was set at $25,000, and he is to appear in court May 13.
Billy Eugene Cook, 51, of Smithville Feb. 9 was charged with criminal trespassing and theft of property. Cook entered onto a property at Lakeveiw Drive on Jan. 5 without the owner’s consent and took a Lodge cast iron skillet valued at $65. He is to appear in court on May 6.
Freddy Sylvester Stringer, 47, of Liberty was arrested Feb. 9 and for violation of the sex offender registry. His bond was set at $10,000 and he is to appear in court May 6. On Feb 5 a deputy was dispatched to a residence in Liberty for an unwanted guest. The deputy spoke with Stringer who was furloughed from White County Jail on Feb. 2. He had been out of jail for three days and failed to report to the sex offender registry within 48 hours in DeKalb County which is longer than the allotted days.
Maranda Rose Smith, 32, of Smithville was arrested Feb. 10 and charged with three counts of forgery and three counts of theft. On Oct. 29, 2020, Smith stole a checkbook from someone and forged a check for $180. She forged two checks on Oct. 31, one for $350 and another for $450 depositing into her account. The victim state they did not write the checks to her. She was also written a citation for simple possession after being searched at booking into the jail, she was found to have a small baggie tucked into the right side of her bra. The bag contained .6 grams of a crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine. Her bond was set at $12,000, and she is to appear in court May 6.
Steven Ray Foster, 29, of Smithville was arrested Feb. 10 for contraband into a penal system. A correctional officer found a white substance on Foster, believe to be methamphetamine weighing .2 grams, after seeing him remove something from his body cavity via security cameras. Before entering the jail, Foster was asked if he had anything on him considered contraband and he said no. He is to appear in court April 15.
Gregory Michael Patton Jr., 21, of Lancaster was arrested on Feb. 11 for DUI. A deputy responded to Robinson Road for a vehicle accident. He saw a Geo Prism at a residence on Robinson Road with Patton passed out at the wheel. After the deputy awoke him, he admitted he had been drinking earlier in the night. He also had a bottle of Smirnoff Ice in the passenger floorboard. He performed poorly on field sobriety task. He was also cited for an open container and no insurance. He is to appear in court May 6.
Locking their selves out of a car, and taking an antenna to try to unlock the door got two people arrested last week. Misty Dawn Gingerich, 31, of Smithville and Joseph Daniel Morgan, 22, of Woodbury were both charged with theft but for two different reasons.
A detective was investigating a case of a gas drive-off which happened on Feb. 8 at the Stop & Buy in Liberty. A vehicle had pumped gas in the amount of $25.24 and drove off without paying. On Feb. 10, the same vehicle was at DeKalb Market and the driver and passenger had locked themselves out of the car. Morgan the driver admitted to Sheriff Department detective that he had gotten gas at the Stop & Buy and driven off. He was cited with theft. Gingerich was charged with theft after she took an antenna from a parked car in the DeKalb Market parking lot to try to unlock the vehicle they were locked out of. She was cited for theft for that incident.
Jennifer Elizabeth Chapman, 37, of Smithville was cited for fraudulent use of a credit card on Feb. 10. Chapman used a credit card in the month of December 2019 and January 2021 without the owner’s consent. The card was used twice for Xfinity Mobile and once for Amazon Prime totaling purchases of $375.38. She is to appear in court April 22.
