Police Make Arrest after Brutal Assault

Smithville Police had to deal with some tense situations over the past few weeks, including a brutal assault using brass knuckles, and a man threatening police during a domestic situation.

Smithville Police Chief Mark Collins said that on October 21, 23-year-old Markus Majka of Smithville was arrested after an assault with brass knuckles. He is under a $30,000 bond and was in court on November 7.

According to Chief Collins, police responded to 670 Miller Road on a report of an aggravated assault. Upon arrival, officers found the victim with serious head injuries. Police say a broken pair of brass knuckles were found laying on the floor of the home.

The victim in the case had to be flown to Vanderbilt Medical center in Nashville by Lifeflight helicopter. Through an investigation, police allege that Majka hit the victim in the head so hard that the brass knuckles broke.

On October 23, 43-year-old Melisa Edmunds of Smithville was arrested for public intoxication.

According to Chief Collins, officers responded to Hooper Street in reference to a physical altercation. Upon arrival, officers found the disturbance to be verbal only and separated the two parties in the yard.

Police say that Edmunds had a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person and was unsteady on her feet. Officers forwarded her an opportunity to gather her belongings and call someone to pick her up, but the woman continued to yell and be disruptive.

Officers once again gave Edmunds the opportunity to leave peacefully, but they claim she continued to yell and began threatening the other party in front of them. She was then placed in custody.

On October 24, 46-year-old Michael Ponder of Smithville was cited for possession of a schedule II drug.

Chief Collins states that an officer was called to assist the Tennessee Department of Corrections with a home visit on Robinson Road. Upon arrival, officers located .8 grams of meth in the home. Ponder was in court on November 7.

On October 29, 27-year-old sisters, Chloe Smith and Carlee White were arrested for domestic assault. Each are under a $2,000 bond and they were in court on November 7.

Police say that officers responded to West Broad Street in reference to a 911 hangup call. Upon arrival, officers found that both women had been in a physical altercation with Chloe’s husband. Police found physical evidence of the assault and determined that both Chloe and Carlee were the primary aggressors.

On November 2, 55-year-old Burnette Jones of Smithville was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

According to Chief Collins, officers were dispatched to South College Street in reference to a domestic situation. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant who stated that Jones was on his way to get his property and that he was mad. She told officers that she was afraid of what he would do when he got there as there had been domestic issues in the past.

While officers were speaking to the woman, Jones arrived and allegedly started walking towards the woman in an aggressive manner. Police ordered Jones to stop, but he refused and continued to walk towards them.

Jones then allegedly attempted to get into an officer’s face, with the officer commanding him to step back and having to push the man away.

Jones then allegedly told the officers he had a knife and began to reach into his pocket. The officer drew his Taser and instructed Jones not to move. Another officer attempted to handcuff Jones, but he resisted, ending with Jones being taken to the ground and taken into custody.

Police say that while he was in custody, Jones kicked an officer in the leg and began threatening them. Jones is under a $10,000 bond and was in court on November 14.

On November 5, 38-year-old Philip Deason of Cookeville was arrested for DUI and violation of implied consent. Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Congress and Broad in reference to a male subject being passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Upon Arrival, officers made contact with Deason, who allegedly had a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech. He submitted to, but performed poorly on all sobriety tasks, and was placed in custody. He is under a $2,000 bond and was in court November 6.

On November 7, 32-year-old Hope Hicks of Smithville was arrested for domestic assault.

According to Chief Collins, officers responded to Dearman Street on a report of a domestic. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim and found physical evidence of an assault. Hicks was determined to be the primary aggressor and was placed in custody. He is under a $3,500 bond and due in court on November 21.
