The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department arrested a wanted fugitive last week, as well as catching a local man for using a stolen credit card.
Sheriff Patrick Ray told the Smithville Review that on January 4, 53-year-old Elwood Lamar Benefield of Valley Trail, Acworth, GA, was arrested on a fugitive from justice charge out of Bartow County, GA. Benefield was wanted for a violation of probation and had alluded authorities.
Benefield is under a $75,000 bond and is due to appear in court on January 20.
That same day, 25-year-old Bobby Ray Murphy of Dale Ridge Road, Dowelltown, was arrested for fraudulent use of a credit card. He is under a $3,500 bond and will appear in court on January 20.
A Sheriff's Department detective says that on December 6, 2021, Murphy used a credit/debit card that was taken from a residence on Dale Ridge Road with the intent to deprive the owner of the card of their money. Murphy did not have consent to use the card and used it between November 24, and December 6, 2021, for a total of $732.34.
On January 7, 21-year-old Stephen Charles Clark of Backbone Road, Sparta, was arrested for aggravated assault. He is under a $10,000 bond, and is due in court on January 27.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy responded to a residence on Backbone Road on a report of domestic violence. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with a female who advised that Clark had struck her in the face and other parts of her body, and also pointed a gun at her. A .22 caliber revolver was found at the scene.
On January 12, 58-year-old Charles Glen Lewis of Medley Amonette Road, Buffalo Valley, was arrested for aggravated assault. He is under a $7,500 bond and will appear in court on January 27.
According to Sheriff Ray, a deputy was dispatched to Medley Amonette Road for a domestic call involving a firearm. The deputy made contact with a female who advised that she and her husband, Lewis, had been in a verbal argument, when Lewis went to the bedroom and retrieved a firearm. The female then alleged that Lewis returned from the bedroom, pointed the gun at her and stated, "I will end this."
Lewis allegedly admitted to the deputy that he had pointed a Springfield Hellcat 9mm pistol at his wife, causing the woman to be in fear of imminent danger.
