The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department made several arrests over the past few weeks, including order of protection violations, public intoxications, and even aggravated assault.
Sheriff Patrick Ray reported to the Smithville Review that on June 18, 62-year-old Barry Jay Mitchell of Whitherspoon Drive, Smithville, was arrested for violation of an order of protection. He is being held under no bond, and he appeared in court on June 20.
According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, on June 13, a deputy responded to the sheriff’s office to meet with a female in reference to Mitchell violating the order of protection. Mitchell allegedly sent a voicemail to the protected person, and he was served with the order of protection on June 10.
On June 21, 46-year-old Samuel Wade Walker of Adcock Cemetery Road, Smithville, was charged with driving on a suspended license. He is under a $5,000 bond and he is set to appear in court on July 18.
A deputy was patrolling Nashville Highway when he witnessed a black Nissan Frontier run through a stop sign, with a brake light out. After a traffic stop, the deputy made contact with Walker, who, after a computer check, was found to have a suspended license for accumulated conviction points from February 29, 2023 to August 29, 2023.
On June 23, 57-year-old Joe Anthony Young of Students Home Road, Smithville, was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest. He is under a $5,000 bond and he is due in court on July 11.
A deputy responded to Students Home Road in reference to a suspicious person sitting in a vehicle in the front yard. The deputy made contact with Young, who was sitting in his vehicle with blood all over his head.
After brief conversation, Young allegedly grabbed ahold of the front of the deputy’s vest, at which point the deputy removed him from the vehicle and placed the man in handcuffs. Young then attempted to flee on foot, until the necessary amount of force was used to regain control of the situation.
Authorities say Young was acting erratically and his pupils appeared to be pinpointed. For his safety and the safety of others, he was placed in custody.
That same day, 53-year-old Dennis Lee McClain of Pinewood Drive, Dowelltown, was arrested for aggravated assault. He is under a $7,500 bond and his court date is set for July 11.
A deputy responded to Piney Woods Road, in reference to a domestic case that had occurred the previous day. The deputy spoke with a female who reported that her boyfriend, McClain, became irate with her and fired multiple shots inside the house with a 9mm handgun, placing the female in fear for her life.
