For the ninth year Smithville Elementary School honored the county’s veterans, from World War II to the Enduring Freedom, the event showing appreciation for their service while at the same time giving the school children an appreciation for their sacrifice.
“These men and women did something most cannot do, such as the act of sacrifice,” said Principal Anita Puckett in addressing the room filled with Pre-K through second graders along with over 25 veterans who sat on stage. “Sacrifice is the offering of one’s self for a higher purpose. That purpose is for our freedom.”
She reminded the school children how fortunate they are to be in America. “You are very fortunate that you were born in America,” she said. “Home of the free and the brave.”
According to Jan Thomas who helps coordinate the annual event, the veteran’s program as SES began in 2010 with the second grade putting on a program for 10 veterans. It has grown since that time to extend to the whole school.
“Each veteran will get a letter and then more are sent out, some to those who are deployed,” Thomas noted, revealing that 201 letters were written and given or sent to veterans by students at SES this year.
Thursday’s event included what has become a tradition where students from each grade sing the theme of the branches of service.
“By the time students are in second grade they will have learned and sung all the themes for the branches of service,” Puckett said. “It’s a great thing for them to learn.”
The veteran’s program also included video tributes to veterans presented by Beth Cantrell as well as poems honoring their service.
“It’s not about us, it’s about them and the sacrifice they have made for us,” a misty eyed Thomas pointed out. “This is our way to give back to our veterans.”
