The city has set up 20 mile per hour zones in a few subdivisions.

Motorists better get the lead out when they’re motoring through subdivisions in Smithville as many will now have a maximum speed limit of 20 miles per hour.

The Smithville city board of mayor and aldermen voted to make subdivisions that do not already have posted speed limits have a speed limit of 20 miles per hour after several complaints by residents of the subdivisions.

City Police Chief Mark Collins told the board at the their last regular meeting that he would recommend the speed limit for Greenwood Drive, noting motorists who travel over 30 through the residential section are still going to fast given the area.

The board’s ratification of the chief’s suggestion will cost about $1,000 for speed limit signs and will effect around four subdivisions.
