Students Honored at Awards Night

Dozens of DCHS seniors were honored with scholarships and awards last week during the Senior Awards Night ceremony.


DeKalb County High School hosted its Senior Awards Night ceremony last Tuesday, May 9, where several 2023 seniors were honored for their academic and athletic achievements. The event was held in the DCHS gym where friends and family gathered to watch the ceremony.

Robert Wheeler was named Valedictorian, and received an Alan Hooper Memorial for $500, a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, a University of Mississippi ACT Merit Scholarship for $98,880, and a University of Mississippi Valedictorian Scholarship for $6,000.

Two of the top students of the night were brothers Aaron Gottlied who received an $110,000 academic/athletic scholarship to Milligan University, and Nolan Gottlied who received a $130,000 academic/athletic scholarship to Cumberland University.

Ean Jones was presented with the Clay Edwards Memorial Tiger Pride Scholarship for $500, and a Lindsey Wilson College Athletic Scholarship for $72,000. Elishah Ramos was awarded a $36,000 athletic scholarship to Bethel University, while Alexandrea Beneke received a Tennessee Tech University athletic scholarship (81 percent tuition).

Stetson Agee received $500 from the DeKalb County Cattlemen’s Association, the Officer Joe Bowen Memorial for $500, $500 from the DeKalb County Farm Bureau Young Farmers & Ranchers, $350 from the DeKalb County Soil Conservation District, the MTSU True Blue scholarship for $14,000, and received a Motlow State Community College Associates Degree.

Colby Barnes was presented with the Coach Jerry Foster Memorial Scholarship for $500, the Officer Joe Bowen Memorial for $500, the Clyde Thomas Family Trust for $5,000 the Brenda Hooper Memorial presented by DCHS Class of 1975 for $300 and the Jo Ellen Huffman & Ron Rogers Memorial 4-H Scholarship for $500.

Amelia Atnip: Salutatorian received the MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000 and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000.

Cameron Bailey was presented with a Tennessee Tech University Joe and Anne Eaton Engineering Endowed Scholarship for $5,200, while Cooper Brown received a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $12,000.

Isaac Brown was honored with a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $20,000, while Serenity Burgess received a Cumberland University Band Scholarship for $20,000 and the Louis Armstrong Award.

Jadin Burke was named as the Caney Fork Electric 2nd place essay contest winner for $100, while Shan-Chih Chen earned the Joe Hearn Memorial Career and Technical Education Scholarship, presented by the Alexandria Lions Club for $1,000, and the Talmadge Young Automotive Memorial for $300.

Fernando Clavel was honored by the DeKalb County Soil Conservation District with $350, and earned the Lynn Leland Johnson Memorial FFA Agricultural Scholarship for $250, while Gavin Conger was presented with the John Phillip Sousa Award.

Zoe Cripps was presented with the Kyle & Kenny Robinson Memorial for $1,000, Love-Cantrell Funeral Home for $250, a UT-Chattanooga Provost Scholarship for $16,000, and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000.

Luke Driver earned the Gene Haas Scholarship for $2,000, and the Joe Hearn Memorial Career and Technical Education Scholarship presented by the Alexandria Lions Club for $1,000, while Rebecca Eastes was presented a scholarship by the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in McMinnville.

Noah Evans was presented with a MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000, and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000, while Aniston Farler earned a Tennessee Tech University Golden Opportunity for $6,000.

Katherine Gassaway was honored with the 3.21 Run for Down Syndrome Awareness Scholarship for $250, Love-Cantrell Funeral Home for $250, the Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, the DCHS Class of 1966 for $500, a MTSU True Blue for $14,000 and a UT-Knoxville Orange and White Scholarship for $6,000.

Allison Gay was presented the Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, and the Liberty State Bank for $1,000, while Malcolm Gora was named the Caney Fork Electric Essay Contest 1st place winner for $1,000, the Caney Fork Electric Essay Contest Regional Winner for $100, the Caney Fork Electric Essay Contest State 2nd place winner for $2,000, a Woodmen Life US History Award for $50, and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000.

Alyzandra Griffith was honored with a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, a MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000, a Upper Cumberland Association of Realtors for $250, a UT-Knoxville Orange and White Scholarship for $6,000 and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000.

Emma Hancock earned a UT-Martin Dean Scholarship for $8,000 and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000, while Christian Hendrixson was presented a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $12,000.

Chandler Johnson was presented a HOSA Blood Assurance Scholarship for $250, a Tennessee EMS Education Association Scholarship for $500, a DeKalb County Emergency Services Association Scholarship for $500, a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000, and earned a Motlow State Community College Associates Degree.

Emma Johnson was honored with a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, a DeKalb Fishing Team Scholarship for $500, a DeKalb County Board of Education Members Scholarship for $700, and earned a Motlow State Community College Associates Degree.

Jacklyn Kleparek was given an Officer Joe Bowen Memorial Scholarship for $500, a DeKalb County Retired Teachers Scholarship for $300, a Southern Landscape Supply/Diamond 9 Sports Student Athlete Scholarship for $250, a DCHS FCCLA Culinary Scholarship for $250, a Jo Ellen Huffman & Ron Rogers Memorial 4-H Scholarship for $500, a US Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award, a Tennessee Tech University Golden Opportunity for $6,000, and a Tennessee Tech University W. Doyle and Melford Smith Scholarship for $3,000.

Hannah Lohorn was presented $250 from Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, while Sadreanna Magallanes was named a Caney Fork Electric Essay Contest 3rd place winner for $75. Emma Martin was named American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.

Kiley Martin was named Caney Fork Electric Essay Contest 4th place winner for $50, while Devin Maxwell was named US Marine Corps Enlistment.

Aleaha Miller earned the Eddie Crips Memorial Scholarship for $1,000, the DeKalb County Retired Teachers for $300, and the DeKalb County Board of Education Members Scholarship for $700, while Cameron Miller was honored with the Kyle & Kenny Robinson Memorial for $1,000, the Ascension St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital scholarship for $400, the Auburn University All Orange Scholarship for $12,000,  Love-Cantrell Funeral Home for $250, a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, and a MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000.

Ryder Miller was presented a MTSU True Blue scholarship for $14,000, the Tyler Vanhoose Memorial for $2,000, a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $12,000, and earned a Motlow State Community College Associates Degree.

Breanna Millsap was presented a MTSU True Blue award for $14,000, while Samantha Murphy was honored by the DeKalb County Cattlemen’s Association with $500, and DeKalb County Soil Conservation District for $350.

Matthew Nokes earned a Cumberland University Presidential Award Scholarship, a MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000, and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000, while Sheridan O’Conner was presented $250 by Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, a University of Tennessee Volunteer Scholarship for $12,000, and a US Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence award.

Jonathan Garcia Ortega was honored with a US Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award and US Marine Corps Enlistment, while Conner Paladino was given a MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000.

Katie Patterson was presented $250 by Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, and a Tennessee Tech University Cracker Barrel Endowed Scholarship for $1,500, while Alyssa Pugh earned $500 from the Smithville Business & Professional Women’s Club, a MTSU Blue Raider Scholarship for $1,000, and a MTSU Future Alumni Scholarship for $6,000.

Darrah Ramsey was given $250 by Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, a MTSU True Blue for $14,000, a UT-Knoxville Orange and White Scholarship for $6,000 and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $12,000.

McKenzie Sanders earned a Lucille Stewart Educational Award for $2,000, a DCHS FCCLA TAP Scholarship for $250, and a DeKalb County Board of Education Members Scholarship for $700, while Brayden Shehane was presented with a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, and a UT-Chattanooga Mocs Scholarship for $12,000.

Logan Starkey was presented $500 by DeKalb County Junior Pro Basketball, $1,000 by FirstBank, a Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award & Distinction, a MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000, $1,000 by the Scottish Rite, a UT-Knoxville Orange and White Scholarship for $6,000 and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000.

Hannah Swoape received a US Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence, while Kenlee Taylor earned a Officer Joe Bowen Memorial Scholarship for $500.

Sharon Bernardo Trejo was named by Tennessee College of Applied Technology McMinnville, while Connor Vance earned a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $12,000.

Elizabeth Vaughn earned a MTSU True Blue Scholarship for $14,000, and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $12,000, while Brett Walker earned a 3.21 Run for Down Syndrome Awareness Scholarship for $250, a MTSU Blue Raider Scholarship for $1,000, a MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000, and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000.

Layla Walker received a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $12,000, and earned a Motlow State Community College Associates Degree, while Morgan Walker was presented an Ascension St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital scholarship for $400, and a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000.

Liam Wallace received a Clyde Thomas Family Trust Scholarship for $1,000, a DTC Communications Audio/Visual Scholarship for Excellence for $1,000, and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000, while Carlee West received $500 from DeKalb County Junior Pro Basketball.

Kaleb Wildes was presented with a Motlow State Community College Scholarship for $2,000, while Jenna Wright earned $250 from Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, a HOSA Blood Assurance Scholarship for $250, a Tennessee EMS Education Association Scholarship for $500, a Motlow State Community College Scholarship for $3,000 and a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000.

Kelbi Young earned a Tennessee Tech University Presidential Scholarship for $16,000, a Southern Landscape Supply/Diamond 9 Sports Student Athlete Scholarship for $250, and a MTSU Presidential Scholarship for $18,000.
