Veterans Remember Fallen Comrades
Memorial Day
Local veterans pose at the DeKalb Veteran's Memorial after a wreath laying ceremony last Memorial Day.

The American Legion held a Memorial Day ceremony last Monday at the Veteran's Memorial at the DeKalb County Courthouse. Veterans were joined by friends and family for prayer, music and the annual laying of the wreath to honor those who have fallen while serving their country.

Susan Hinton and Jackie Smith entertained the crowd with a performance of some patriotic music, including the Star Spangled Banner, followed by a prayer by American Legion Chaplin Bro. Don Rigsby.

"We want to honor those that have died, but we should also thank a veteran that is alive today, because they have sacrificed also," Rigsby said. "The ones we honor on Memorial Day paid the ultimate sacrifice. They gave their life for us, just like Christ gave his life for us also."

Adjutant of the American Legion 122, Ronnie Redmon, spoke to the crowd telling the true meaning of the holiday. "We want to remember those who have fallen in the past, and the ones that have since gone on," Redmon said. "We should take a moment to remember our lost loved ones, our fallen soldiers."

A Taps was played by Hinton, then at the conclusion of the ceremony a wreath was then laid at the Veterans' Memorial by Dennis Boland and Jerry Adcock.
