The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department made several arrests over the past week
On February 27, 42-year-old Karrie Ann Shoemaker of Pistol Road, Sparta, was arrested for criminal impersonation. She is under a $3,500 bond and will be in court on March 20.
According to Sheriff Ray, on February 7, 2024, a deputy was patrolling Sparta Highway when he made contact with a black Chevy Silverado that almost ran off the road, and had the wrong tag on the vehicle. After traffic stop and made contact with a male, and a female passenger.
Authorities say the woman gave an ID for a different person, and when the deputy asked her name, the woman gave the name on the ID. The deputy called into dispatch, who verified that the name on the ID was actually in jail.
After asking her name again, the woman presented an ID for another female, and allegedly told the deputy that she had lied because she thought she had warrants out of Putnam County.
The deputy would later identify the woman as Shoemaker, who was wanted out of Van Buren County.
On March 1, 56-year-old Artemio Alfaro of Broad Valley Road, Sparta, was arrested for DUI first offense. He is under a $2,500 bond and he will appear in court on March 13.
A deputy was traveling east on Sparta Highway when he observed a white Dodge Challenger leave its lane of travel multiple times, as well as driving under the speed limit of under 55 mph.
After a traffic stop, authorities say the driver, Alfaro, had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person, red watery eyes, and was unsteady on his feet. He allegedly admitted to have consumed several alcoholic beverages from Turtles Bar and Grill prior to driving, and performed poorly on field sobriety tasks.
Also arrested at the scene was 62-year-old Polly Cowan Daley of Johnsons Chapel Road, Sparta. She was charged with DUI by allowance. She is under a $2,500 bond and she will be in court on March 13.
Daly, a passenger in the vehicle, was the register owner of the vehicle. Due to her allowing an intoxicated person to take possession and operate the vehicle, she was also placed in custody.
Also on March 1, 57-year-old Gary Jason Britt of Shady Place Road, Smithville, was arrested for driving on a revoked drivers license. He is under a $2,500 bond and will appear in court on March 20.
A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a blue GMC truck due to the wrong registration on the vehicle. After running the driver’s information through dispatch, it came back as revoked on December 21, 2022, out of Wilson County.
That same day, 51-year-old Michael Lance Chancey of Sparta Highway, Smithville, was arrested for domestic assault. He is under a $3,500 bond and will be in court on March 20.
Sheriff Ray alleges that Chancey went to a female’s apartment and struck her in between the eyes, causing a mark and a small cut to her forehead.
Also on March 1, 41-year-old Steven Darrell Bly of Austin Bottom Road, Baxter, was arrested for public intoxication. He is under a $1,500 bond and he is due in court on March 20.
Sheriff Ray said that around 10:18 pm, a deputy received a call for a welfare check on a man walking in the middle of the road, dancing and screaming. There were two different 911 calls reporting the subject.
The deputy made contact with Bly on Austin Bottom Road at the end of Dunn Drive. The deputy reported that Bly’s eyes were bloodshot, and the man was fidgety and unable to stand still. The man allegedly admitted to drinking earlier, and an open container of alcohol was found on his person.
