A Hidden Gem in Smithville
Restaurant review
Mark Mygrant

Aces Steak and Seafood Italian Restaurant has proven itself to be a culinary destination worthy of the highest praise. During my recent visit, I had the pleasure of enjoying their special of the day, Osso Buco, which was nothing short of exceptional. It rivaled my most memorable dining experiences, including a Florentine steak in Italy and a sausage-stuffed deep-fried quail in Louisville, Kentucky.  It’s a testament to the chef’s skill that a small-town restaurant can produce cuisine of this caliber.

The Osso Buco was a masterpiece of slow-cooked perfection. The veal shank, tender and succulent, effortlessly fell off the bone. It was expertly paired with a Parmesan risotto alla Milanese, a creamy saffron-infused dish that complemented the rich meat beautifully. What elevated this dish to extraordinary heights was the complex sauce and gremolata. The sauce, aromatic with slow-cooked vegetables, provided a deep, savory base. The gremolata, a bright mixture of orange and lemon zest, parsley, and garlic, added a citrusy freshness that cut through the richness of the dish.  Aces has consistently delivered quality meals, but this Osso Buco special of the day truly showcased their culinary prowess.

Several other memorable dishes include homemade lasagna and handmade ravioli. The rotating seafood dishes are also exceptional and rarely found in our area. The star of the seafood entrees is the Scottish salmon served with a tomato basil butter sauce.

All entrées include soup or salad and a side. Warm baked bread and butter are served at each table. Soups are homemade, and salads are fresh greens with house-made dressings. My favorite side is a medley of fresh local garden vegetables or loaded baked potato.  The restaurant offers a local beer or wine menu, many from local breweries and vineyards. You may also BYOB your favorite beverage for a small corkage and setup fee.

While the ambiance is a work in progress, with a recently added wine bar in the back room, the lighting could benefit from being dimmed for a more intimate atmosphere.
