Dry Creek Flashes
Fish shoaling in the Dry Creek stream

In the springtime Horny Heads, small fish with a bony covering on their heads, shoal in the Dry Creek stream. Many years ago when we started housekeeping by the stream my husband, the late Woodrow Frazier, tried to teach me how to catch these fish. The Horny Head fish were shoaling under the bridge traveling to W.O. Womack’s store in large numbers. Woodrow went off to teach school and left me with the task of catching fish. We worked all day trying to catch these fish off the shoal, but as soon as my hand touched one, it would disappear under the small pebbles in the shallow waters. Needless to say we were not successful in our pursuit of these fish; however, my son in law Jerald Cripps said he had fished these shoals many times. He remembers it was some good eating after. Willie Jim Cripps, his late mother, cooked them for all the Cripps and Ayers men. Charles Loring, a Smithville man, came to the valley every year to hook a bucket of these delicious fish. We hope people are still enjoying these fish today. We visited our doctor Dr. Jack Rhody in Alexandria last week. He knew about these fish and had enjoyed their taste. Bro. Donald Owens, my pastor, also remembered the fish. He was raised just a few miles up by the Dry Creek Elementary School.

Mother’s Day lunch brought many of our family home to enjoy a meal prepared by the girls. The children enjoyed playing in a small, back yard pool. In the evening Monica Reynolds prepared a delicious supper for Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Taylor of Smithville, Mrs. Louise Frazier and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Kimbrell. We now possess two Black Magic Elephant Ear plants as a gift from my granddaughter, Monica.

Gail Thompson of Brush Creek attended the Iris Festival in Lebanon. Rita Fuson-Frazier attended the one in Nashville. Both ladies reported these events to be an amazing display of various types of beautiful Iris in bloom.

Tom and Georgie Cripps visited their old Dismal neighborhood on Saturday. They stopped by to see Jerald and Lisa Cripps and Christian. Lisa and Jerald really misses them being next door neighbors. Tom said he already has a garden out in the back area of his yard in Alexandria. Good for you Tom.

We send sympathy to the families of Dorothy Crook Truitt, Louise Brown, Hoyte Garrison, and Novella Brown. Mrs. Brown lived several years in our neighborhood. She was a sweet lady. We were saddened to hear of her death.

We send Happy Birthday wishes out to Jimmy Womack, Helen Burt, Regina Robinson, Ray Hare, Clara Roehner, and our daughter Peggy Thomas.
