Going broke on Valentines
LeAnn Judkins 2025

The couple’s exchange of Valentine’s Day gifts is exorbitant.

Thus, the younger you are, the less your Valentine’s Day costs.  As with age, the older you become, the more costly is this special day of love.

Kisses, hugs, and staying home are free and cost nothing!

Typically, each year, students, especially pupils, bring their Valentine’s decorated boxes to school.  Made at home, these boxes are self-dependent versions of the holder – superheroes, princesses, snacks, or internet characters.  During class time, the students exchange cards with their peers and teachers.

The all-important question is why do we give Valentine’s Day cards anyway?

In continuation, the custom of trading Valentines seems to have begun in Europe and in the United States during the 18th century.  However, some legends attribute the exchange of affectionate greetings to St. Valentine.  He was one of two martyred Christians, both of whom were executed on Valentine’s Day around the year 270.  Some folklore even comment that it was only one man who secretly married couples to save the man from war.  Because of these actions, he was condemned to death.   While in prison, Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s daughter and the night before his execution, he wrote her a farewell message and signed off with “Your Valentine.”

The day did not become Valentine’s Day until the 5th century when Pope Gelasius needed a convenient holiday to replace a Roman holiday.

Scholars believe it did not become a day to celebrate love until 1,000 years later.  Some assume it was Geoffrey Chaucer’s ‘The Parlement of Foules,” which he wrote in 1380=90.  It was with this poem that collected the day with romance.  The earliest letters between lovers referring to St. Valentine’s Day soon began appearing in 14th century publications.73

Yes, Valentine’s Day cards have become a big business.  At their heart is a long-standing playful tradition between couples, friends, family members and classmates to express their affection.  Today, assorted Valetine’s Day cards range in price from $2.79 to $7.79.  Don’t forget to add a first-class postage stamp for $.73 cents.  A heart-shaped box of Russel-Stover candy sells for $29.99 today.  The average Valentine’s Day dinner runs about $154.00 in the United States.

I’m glad I’m single!!!
