I suppose as we get older, a person likes to reminisce about childhood memories, or least I enjoy it. I find it interesting how certain things stick out in my mind while most are forgotten.
This week I was thinking about the time when Mama and Daddy were given a real scare. For some reason, and I can’t imagine why, Mama had some acid in a jar.
I was playing alone in the kitchen and spotted the jar with liquid inside. Thinking that it might be sweet tea, I picked it up, removed the lid, and then decided to taste it. Before I could get it to my lips, some of the liquid spilled on my chest and began to burn me.
I screamed to the top of my lungs. Mama came running, and thinking that I must have drunk some of the acid; she grabbed me into her arms and ran straight to the cornfield where Daddy was working.
Daddy hitched our mare to the buggy and headed out to get a doctor. I don’t remember for sure, but I think it was either Dr. Allen in Smithville or Dr. White in Dowelltown. While driving as fast as he could, one of the wheels fell off the buggy.
Daddy unhitched the mare and rode her to get the doctor leaving the buggy on side of the road. When Daddy returned with the doctor, they agreed that I had not drunk anything, but simply spilled it on me.
As I think about it now, the Lord saved me from harm when the acid spilled before I could drink it. Anyway, they cried with me, relieved that I was not going to die from drinking acid. I should have gotten a whipping, but they were so happy, I was just given a good scolding.
