The Amen Corner
The weather was perfect in Florida

Fall break is almost over for our county’s children and teachers. Many chose to take vocational during this time.

I, for one, chose to spend a few days in Destin with other gals, Elaine Craighead of Cookeville/Gainesboro, Owen Ford of Monterey and her daughter Lynn Gibson of Martin. We hung out at the beach in the mornings and at the pool in the afternoon. We ate at a different seafood restaurant every night. Fortunately my nephew Robin Driver and wife Kristie were also staying at the Amalfi Resort and helped with our baggage. He was our valet. The weather was perfect and everyone was compatible.

Meanwhile, Wayne Hubbs has just returned from visiting his daughter Sheryl May and husband in Germany. He flew United Air Lines out of New Jersey and landed in Frankfort ten hours later. Sheryl and her husband drove Wayne to different sights in Germany. They viewed the largest castle in Heidelberg. He stated that people there walked a lot. There were very few cars, and a lot of restaurants. They toured the city of Kingsberg which grew grapes. Also on their tour was a furniture company where all of their furniture looked the same with a distinctive style. Most houses are built in Canada and shipped to Germany. He took 356 pictures. By the way, his daughter is a professional tour guide. Sounds like a very interesting trip.

Dr. John Carpenter and Kathy have returned home after a vacation in Gulf Shores. They said the weather was great. Even preachers deserve time off. Reverend Edwin Moore filled the pulpit at Frist Methodist while Dr. John was out.

A big event at the Webb House Saturday was the celebration of Ethel Keith’s 101st birthday. She received many cars and gifts. A delicious party plate and punch was served to family and friends. Pictures displayed showed her early family and friend’s lives. She was a member of the BPW Club and Eastern Star. Mark Pody presented her with a Tennessee proclamation from Governor Haslam. It was good to see old friends there helping Ethel celebrate her birthday, such as Jimmie Mae Whitlock, Jean Ann and her brothers.

All the little spooks and goblins need to be reminded of the downtowns trick-or-treat event on Halloween.

Also the new Fast Pace on West Broad Street will be welcoming children on Oct. 31 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Halloween time at the Justin Pottery Library will be at 5 p.m. on Halloween day.

I always look forward to the end of Daylight Saving Time. This year is on Nov. 2 Turn your clocks back one hour. An extra hour of sleep.

And, remember to vote on Nov. 4.

Get-well wishes to Kathy Carpenter following surgery, Wilma Commer, Kim Lawson, Charlotte Barnard, C.J. Jatalia, Dot Tittsworth, Lewis Conklin, Tony Kava, Hoyte Odom, Bobby Pack, June Rhody, Madison Judkins, Jerry Williams, and Sara Brown.

Happy birthday in early November to Holly Bogle, Celia Whaley, Kristy Williams, Vicky Duke, Sherree Mareman, Chandra Adcock, Christie Driver and Terra Turner.

The Methodist Bazaar will be Nov. 7 at their fellowship building on Church Street next door to Love-Cantrell Funeral Home from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. There is a separate room there for non-members who want to sell their crafts. Tables are $25. If interested contact the church secretary, Becky Roberts at 597-4961 or Miranda Waggoner at 215-6572.

Sympathy to the family of J.C. Vanatta, Sue Lassiter’s brother, and other families who have lost loved ones.

Thought of the week: "Smelling bananas and/or green apples can help you lose weight."

Amen.
