Welcome back to Through the Grapevine, week number 4 if you’re keeping count. What about this fickle weather? I wish I was six-years-old in 1960 and Daddy and Lucy and I were walking through the mountains of snow toward the neighboring Sunrise Grill. What fun! What memories!
A HISTORY NOTE: “History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from it. And, if it offends you, even better. Because then you are less likely to repeat it. It’s not yours to erase. It belongs to all of us.”
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
• Wednesday, January 29: Oprah Winfrey was born on this day 70 years ago in 1954.
• Thursday, January 30: In 1882, Franklin D. Roosevelt was born.
• Friday, January 31: MLB Jackie Robinson was born.
• Saturday, February 1: Space Shuttle “Columbia” destroying and killing all six astronauts aboard, including public school teacher, Christa McCullough.
• Sunday, February 2: Ban lifted on African National Congress.
• Monday, February 3: The 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1870. It gave American’s the right to vote.
• Tuesday, February 4: In 1945, the Yalta conference was opened. The crux of the meeting was to defeat Nazi Germany.
• Wednesday, February 5: The anniversary of MLB Hank Aaron’s death in 2021. He played with the Atlanta Braves until his retirement in 1976.
ANGIE’S BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “But, straightaway, Jesus spake unto them, saying, ‘Be of good cheer. It is I. Be not afraid.” (Matthew 14:27)
TODAY’S THOUGHT: “If it stays, it is love. If it ends, it is a love story. If it never begins, it is poetry. (Nicomachus)
THE WHITE HOUSE:
With the inauguration of the 47th president of the United States, there are several facts about his residence in Washington, D. C.:
• George Washington, the first president, chose the land for which the house was built.
• John Adams, the second president, was the first to live in an unfinished White House.
• There are 132 rooms.
• There are 35 bathrooms.
• There are six levels.
• There are 412 doors.
• There are 147 windows.
• There are 28 fireplaces.
• There are eight staircases and three elevators.
Theodore Roosevelt was the president who named it “The White House” in 1901. Beforehand, it was called “The President’s House.”
There are five full-time chefs. It also has a tennis court, jogging track, swimming pool, movie theatre and a bowling lane.
It requires 570 gallons of paint just to cover its outside surface.
ANOTHER FAVORITE:
“To laugh often and much,
To win the respect of intelligent
people and the affection of children,
To earn the respect of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends.
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition.
To know each one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES:
Sissy Wray and Linda Caldwell and Rick Lee – Wednesday, February 12
Edgar Evins, Thursday, February 13.
Karen Cooker, Friday, February 14 = Valentine’s Day.
Abi Hendrix, Monday, February 16.
Becca Campbell, Tuesday, February 18.
WEEKLY LUCY UPDATE: Ask Lucy the name of the book that Jim mailed to her a few years ago. I’ll divulge first. It is called “History for Dummies.” And, there is a valid reason for this in-depth surprise gift. Not long ago, my baby sister asked my son, “Is Gettysburg close to Gatlinburg?” It’s a long way from Pennsylvania to Tennessee, Lucy. We’re bless that she majored in math during her college years. She would have flunked history.
THE END: Until next week, BE NICE!
