I recently wrote about Mrs. Della Vaughn, my mother-in-law, who in my opinion was one of the sweetest persons I have ever known.  She was almost like a second mother to me.
I was thinking about her while remembering how times have changed.  Mrs. Vaughn gave birth to eight children; my husband, J.D., was the second.  Back in those days, which was in the 1920’s and 30’s, some ladies didn’t want to admit being pregnant until it was obvious.
Mrs. Vaughn said in the early days of one of her pregnancies that her mother-in-law, Sibby Vaughn, was visiting.
One morning, Miss Della was chopping cabbage to make kraut.  The more cabbage she chopped, the sicker she became.  It was one of those mornings that many women go through during pregnancy.  Miss Sibby asked Miss Della if she could be pregnant. Miss Della did not want to admit it.  So, she continued to chop more cabbage as fast as she could while shaking her head to indicate ‘no.’
Nowadays, most women can hardly wait to tell their family and friends of the blessed news.
Yes, that is just one example of how times have changed.
