Ms. Carrie Helen Smith,  affectionately known as “Miss Carrie" to most and "Mama Helen" to her family, passed away Tuesday night, July 20, 2021 at the age of 107 at NHC Healthcare of Smithville.

 

She was a homemaker and attended the Church of God in Alexandria and Grace Bible Church for several years. She considered her best birthday to be November 5, 1997, when she obeyed the gospel and was baptized into Christ at Northside Church of Christ in Smithville. When anyone would complement Miss Carrie on her sweet spirit, she would reply, “That’s the Jesus in me” or when they would ask how she was doing , she would say, “I’m blessed.” She spent much of her time caring for her children, grandchildren neighborhood children and doing Bible studies with them. She enjoyed being the center of attention and was honored at the age of 100 to be the Grand Marshal in the Christmas Parade in Alexandria.  

 

Ms. Carrie was born on July 12, 1914 in Alexandria, TN to her parents, the late Lem and Beatrice Griffith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Smith, Sr.; two daughters, Barbara Ann Smith and Carrie Dean Bass; one son, Edward Wayne Smith; two brothers, Grady Sims and Edward Ray Griffith; and two sisters, Wilhemine Moore and Stella Dowell.

 

Funeral service was held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Burnes Lyons, Bro. Jordan Timmons, Bro. Ronnie Timmons and Bro. Steve Officer officiated with burial following at Dowell Cemetery in Alexandria. 

 

Survivors include three sons, James (Mary) Smith of Alexandria, Wade (Jackie) Smith of Smithville and   Bill Smith of Old Hickory; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Several great great grandchildren also survive. 

 

Pallbearers included Darrin Dillegard, Terry Bass, Dennis Bass, Anthony Tubbs, Lee Fisk, Maurice Tubbs and Jalin Dillegard. Granddaughters served as flower bearers. 

 

Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, Smithville, was in charge of the arrangements.
