Funeral services for William Jesse Sargent, 100, of Smithville were held Feb. 8 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Bro. Michael Hale officiated with burial following at Whorton Springs Cemetery. Mr. Sargent passed away Feb. 4 at his residence. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife Judy Close of Smithville; step-son Norman (Lea) Close of Loudon; two granddaughters Amanda Corts and Sabrina Fortuny; three great-grandchildren Josephine Corts, Max and Alex Fortuny; and three siblings James and Sam Sargent and Emma Jane Smith. Pallbearers included Norman Close, Woody Adcock, Mark Ashburn, Jeremy Ashburn, Doug Waggoner and Charles White. DeKalb Funeral Chapel, Smithville, was in charge of the arrangements.
