The 1972 DCHS Tiger Football Team were on hand during the Tigers’ Homecoming game against Livingston last Friday night, celebrating their 50th Anniversary Reunion. The team was recognized during halftime as the first Tiger team to have winning season in the history of DeKalb County High School.
The team finished the 1972 season on the field at 6-4 but after a forfeit by Brentwood the Tigers boasted a 7-3 season. The 1972 Tigers defeated Woodbury 28-12, Baxter 8-6, Montgomery Central 44-8, Gainesboro 42-0, Monterey 6-0, and Grundy County 16-6. The Tigers lost to Huntland 20-0, Brentwood 33-0, Gordonsville 8-0, and Watertown 26-6.
Members of the team included Captain Mike Corley, Co-Captains David Colwell and Randy Prichard, Bill Owen, Phil Owen, Don Page, Eddie Evans, Robert Donaldson, Joey Goodwin, Fred Dowell, Kirk Wills, Raymond Miller, Doug Hooper, the late Jimmy “Bear” Knowles (represented by Dustin “Little Bear” Knowles), the late Alan Bradford, Robert Rowe, Jay Whiteford, Ronnie Hawkins, Jackie Gaither, Ricky Hale, Doug Davis, Bobby Turner, the late Gwynn Prater, David Davis, John Colvert, Randy Bond, head coach Wayne Cantrell and assistants John Eaton and Donnie Elledge. Managers were Gary Caplinger, Eddie Hyde, and the late Mike Farler.
