Baron and Baroness Named at DCHS Alumni Week
Baron Baroness

DeKalb County High School celebrated Alumni Week last week, culminating in the crowning of the Basketball Baron and Baroness in between games last Friday night. Akin to football’s homecoming celebration, both the Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball programs celebrate with a week of activities.

The titles “Baron” and “Baroness” are derived DeKalb County’s namesake, Revolutionary War hero Major General Baron Johann De Kalb. The county was named in his honor by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1837.

Senior basketball cheerleader/captain Amelia Atnip was named as the 2023 Baroness, while senior Tiger basketball player Robert Wheeler was crowned Baron. The pair were honored in between the girls’ and boys’ games against Livingston.

Atnip is the daughter of Jessica Higgins and Jason Atnip, and is a member of the ACT 21+ Club, Service Society, Science Club, FBLA, Literature Club, and Spanish Club. She attends Mt. Herman Baptist Church, and plans on attending MTSU to complete her bachelor’s degree.

Wheeler is the son of Kim Wheeler and the late Scott Wheeler. He is a member of the Beta Club, FBLA, and the ACT 29+ Club. He plans on going to college to pursue his goal of becoming a physician.

The couple were joined by this year’s DCHS Alumni Homecoming Attendants; Freshmen Addison Swisher and Jon Hendrix; Sophomores Annabella Dakas and Seth Fuson; Juniors Abby Cross and Conner Close; and Seniors Madison Martin and Liam Wallace.
