The DeKalb West Bulldogs continued their dominance on the baseball diamond last week, with a pair of wins over Stone Memorial. Getting ahead of the weather, both games were played on Wednesday, April 9.
In the first game, the Bulldogs would take the early lead, scoring one run at the bottom of the first. After a double fly to left by Keegan Taylor, then a single line drive to second by Reed Midgett, Taylor would steal home as Collin Donnell was up to bat.
The action wouldn’t get going again until the bottom of the fourth when the Bulldogs pretty much sealed the game shut. Gavin Frazier singled on a line drive to center, followed by Zander Simpson with a walk. Maddux Pyburn then singled on a fly to right as Frazier scored. Brantley Brooks then grounded out to the pitcher, but allowed Aiden Cook, running for Simpson, to touch the plate, then Hayden Quarles flew out to center, but allowed Pyburn to score after tagging up.
The Bulldogs weren’t done. Logan Gard reached on an error by the pitcher, then Keegan Taylor singled on a line drive to center. Midgett next singled on a line drive to center, followed by a walk by Donnell, giving Gard an easy trip home. Frazier then singled on a grounder to short as Taylor and Midgett came home. DeKalb was on top 7-0.
Stone had one last chance at bat, but the Bulldogs would put them three up, three down, and claim the 7-0 shutout. Midgett earned the win from the mound with a no-hitter, allowing zero hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out nine and walking none.
The next game would see the Bulldogs dominate once again. To start the game, Taylor would ground out to second, but then Midgett stepped up and homered on a fly to left. Later, after a walk by Frazier, Simpson singled on a fly to center, sending Frazier home. The Bulldogs were on top 2-0.
The Bulldogs added another run at the top of the second, after Donnell reached on an error by third, allowing Gard to come home. DeKalb held a 3-0 lead.
DWS would add another at the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Zayne Thomas reached on a grounder and error by first, as Taylor and Midgett touched the plate. DeKalb was up 5-0.
Stone Memorial would finally get on the scoreboard at the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs. It would be the only runs they would see.
The Bulldogs topped off their score at the top of the fifth, with runs by Gard, Taylor, Midgett, and Donnell.
Stone had one more at bat, but the Bulldogs held on for the 9-3 victory. Pyburn earned the win from the mound, giving up three hits and three runs over five innings, striking out four and walking one.smol
