The DeKalb West School Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs were in action last week, playing a set of games on the road at Forks River, before coming home for Eighth-grade Night as they hosted Tuckers Crossroads.
On Monday, December 2, the teams traveled to Forks River for their first games of the weak. The girls would struggle through their game, while the boys had a much better night.
The Lady Bulldogs would be held scoreless in the first period, while Forks River jumped out to a five-point lead.
Kaylee Womack would finally get DeKalb on the board in the second period, with a single free-throw point, while Forks River added another 10, taking a 15-1 halftime lead.
Katelyn Fry sank a two-pointer for DWS in the third period, while FR scored another 12. They were up 27-3.
Womack added a pair of two-pointers for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth while Fry had a free-throw point. Forks River were held scoreless, but would claim the 27-8 win.
In the boys game, DWS came away with 11 points in the first period. Landon Holmes hit a three-pointer, Lucas Nokes had a pair of twos, and Levi Cripps sank a two-point basket and a pair of free throws. Forks River inched ahead with 13 points.
Cripps added another couple of two-pointers for the Bulldogs in the second, while Holmes had a two-point basket and Maddux Pyburn a free throw. FR was held to just three points, giving the Bulldogs the 18-16 halftime lead.
DWS kept pushing ahead in the third period, with Cripps sinking three two-pointers, while Holmes added two. FR was held to another three, putting DeKalb up 28-19.
The Bulldogs would end the game with 18 more points. Nokes hit three two-point shots and a free throw, while Aiden Garza had one two-point basket. Holmes had four free-throw points, while Cripps added five. Forks River scored 19, but it was not enough. DWS claimed the 46-38 victory.
The following Thursday, the teams were back on their home court, welcoming the hometown crowd for Eighth-grade Night. Eighth grade players, cheerleaders, and managers were honored during a ceremony, before the teams took on visiting Tuckers Crossroads. Once again, the very young Lady Bulldogs would have a hard night, while the boys would prevail.
In the Lady Bulldogs’ game, Fry would put DeKalb on the board in the first period with a lone free-throw point. TXR would run away with 14 points.
Womack would sink a two-point shot for the Lady Bulldogs in the second period, while TXR was held to two as well. Tuckers was up 16-3 at the half.
Womack hit another two in the third, while Katie Jo Bowman sank a free throw. TXR also score 3, keeping a 19-6 lead.
Womack scored once more for DWS, sinking a two-point basket. TXR scored six, taking the 25-8 win.
The Bulldogs had a better night, with Pyburn sinking a pair of two-pointers in the first period, while Holmes had one. TXR was held to two points.
Cripps got on the board in the second, hitting a couple of twos, and three free throws. Garza also had a two-point shot. TXR was held to one point, giving the Bulldogs the 15-3 lead at the half.
Cripps hit a three and a couple of two-point shots for the Bulldogs in the third, while Holmes had a three-pointer and a free throw. Pyburn added a two-pointer and a free throw, and Bentley Watley had a two-pointer. Tuckers scored nine, but DWS commanded a 27-12 lead.
Holmes would score the only points for the Bulldogs in the fourth, a two-point basket, but TXR was held scoreless. The Bulldogs claimed the 32-12 victory.
