Baseball

The DeKalb West Bulldogs baseball team ended their regular season with a couple of wins over Upperman last week, earning the top seed in double elimination post-season play.

On Tuesday, April 22, the team traveled to Baxter for the first game of the series. As it would turn out, the game was decided in the first inning.

With two outs on the board at the top of the first inning, Collin Donnell singled on a grounder to shortstop, followed by walks for Gavin Frazier and Zander Simpson. Maddux Pyburn then stepped to the plate and singled on a line drive to second as Donnell and Frazier each crossed the plate. As Brantley Brooks was up to bat, Simpson stole his was home, putting the Bulldogs up. 3-1.

Upperman would score one run at their first time at bat, but that would be as far as the game would get. The game would go through five innings with the Bulldogs holding on for the 3-1 win.

Reed Midgett earned the win from the mound, giving up five hits and one run over four innings, striking out six and walking none. Donnell collected the save.

The following day, the score would be even better for DeKalb as the Bulldogs hosted Upperman for the final regular season game.

Upperman would take the early lead, scoring one run at the top of the first, and again at the top of the third, but DeKalb would finally settle down and get to putting runs on the board at the bottom of the inning.

Logan Gard singled on a line drive to left, then Midgett got a walk. Keegan Taylor would load the bases with a single grounder to short, then Donnell singled on a fly to center as Gard crossed home. Frazier would fly out to left, but Midgett scored after tagging up. Zander Simpson was up next and doubled on a line drive to center as Taylor scored, then Pyburn doubled on a line drive to center as Donnell and Ayden Buchanan, running for Simpson, each came home. The Bulldogs were up 5-2.

DeKalb added to their lead at the bottom of the fourth, after Taylor singled on a pop fly to right. Donnell would next double on a fly to center as Taylor crossed home, then Frazier doubled on a fly to center as Donnell scored. The Bulldogs held a 7-2 lead.

Upperman would come to bat to start the fifth, but DeKalb would get off the field with the 7-2 victory. Pyburn earned the win, allowing five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out three and walking one.
