The DeKalb West School basketball teams were on the hardwood last week, playing a couple of home games against Union Heights and Smith County Middle School for a day game.

In the girls’ game, the score would remain close and be decided in the fourth period. Katelyn Fry hit on a two-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs in the first period, while UHS came away with five points.

Fry would add a two-pointer and a free throw in the second period, while Eden Donnell had a free throw point. UHS was held to two points, giving them the narrow 7-6 halftime lead.

Kaylee Womack sank a two-pointer for DeKalb in the third period, while UHS pushed ahead with six points. UHS was back up 13-8.

It would come down to the fourth period, where Fry would sink four two-point baskets. UHS was held to just four points, but it was all they needed. UHS took the 17-16 win.

In the Bulldogs game, the boys would jump out with the lead in the first period, scoring 19 points and holding UHS to just six. Levi Cripps sank a pair of three-pointers and a two-point basket, while Maddux Pyburn hit four two-point shots. Landon Holmes had one two-pointer.

The Bulldogs kept pushing in the second, with 14 points. It was a repeat for Cripps with a couple of threes and a two, while Holmes hit a pair of two-point baskets. Pyburn had one. UHS was held to nine, giving DWS the 33-15 halftime lead.

Bentley Watley got on the board for the Bulldogs in the third, scoring on a three-pointer, while Kaden Mullinax hit a two and a free throw. Cripps and Holmes also had two-pointers. UHS was held to four, giving DeKalb the 43-19 lead.

John Byrd sank a three for the Bulldogs in the fourth, while Watley and Cripps each had a two. Lucas Nokes added a free throw point. UHS had seven, giving DWS the 51-26 victory.

The following day, the teams were back in action, this time in a rare day game taking on visiting Smith County. It would be another tough game for the very young Lady Bulldogs, while the boys cruised to a win.

The Lady Bulldogs were held scoreless in the first period, while Smith put eight on the board.

Fry managed to get the Lady Bulldogs on the board in the second with a two-point basket, while the Owlettes added 12. They were up 20-2 at the half.

Womack hit a two for DeKalb in the third, while Smith added six, taking the 26-4 lead.

Fry ended the game for the Lady Bulldogs with a two-pointer in the fourth. Smith would add four and claim the 30-6 win.

In the Bulldogs match, DeKalb scored six in the first period, with a pair of two-pointers and a couple of free throws by Cripps. Smith was held to five.

Cripps hit a three and a couple of twos for the Bulldogs in the second, while Watley added a three-point basket, and Nokes a two-pointer. Smith added just five, giving DeKalb the 18-10 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs put 12 more on the board in the third period, with Cripps and Aiden Garza each with a pair of two-pointers, Watley with a three, and Pyburn adding a free throw. The Owls were held scoreless. DWS was up 30-10.

Pyburn sank a couple of two-point shots, while Cripps added one more two in the fourth period. Smith would surge with 11, but it was far from enough. The Bulldogs claimed the 36-21 victory.
