Bulldogs still undefeated
Bulldog 1

The DeKalb West Bulldogs baseball team still remains undefeated through their first five games after defeating Cumberland County in a series at home and on the road. The Bulldogs did not allow a single run in the two-game series.

On Tuesday, March 18, the Bulldogs were on their home field as they hosted Cumberland County. DeKalb would put the first run of the game on the board at the bottom of the first, after Collin Donnell got a walk. Gavin Frazier singled on a line drive to center field, then Zander Simpson got a walk, loading the bases. Maddux Pyburn took an HBP, sending Donnell across home.

The Bulldogs added to their lead at the bottom of the second, after Landon Holmes walked. Keegan Taylor would next double on a line drive to center as Holmes scored. Donnell would next walk, followed by Taylor scoring on a passed ball as Frazier was up to bat. Frazier would walk, followed by a walk by Zander Simpson. Donnell scored on a wild pitch as Pyburn was at the plate, then Frazier would do the same. Pyburn then singled on a hard ground ball to the pitcher, followed by Simpson coming home. The Bulldogs held a 6-0 lead.

DWS would add to the tally in the fourth, after Pyburn singled on a fly to right. Brantley Brooks reached on a grounder and an error at short, as Pyburn scored, then Brooks would come home on a wild pitch as Hayden Quarles was up to bat. The Bulldogs were up 8-0.

Cumberland had one more at bat, but the Bulldogs would hold them for a shutout. Pyburn earned the win giving up zero hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out eight and walking one.

On Friday, the Bulldogs traveled to the far away land of Crossville, where they once again took on Cumberland County. It would be an even better game for DeKalb.

After a walk for Donnell at the top of the first, he would take third as Frazier grounded out at second. Donnell would steal home as Simpson was up to the plate, putting the Bulldogs 1-0.

Pyburn would reach on a grounder and error by short, at the top of the second, and Quarles would later take a base with a walk. Logan Gard next singled on a fly to left as Pyburn came home. Landon Holmes would get a walk, as would Taylor, loading the bases. Donnell would next walk, allowing Gard to score, then Holmes scored on a wild pitch as Frazier was up to bat. Frazier walked, again loading the bases, then Simpson grounded out to short, but Taylor would come home. Pyburn was back at the plate and singled on a line drive to right, sending Frazier and Donnell home. DWS was up 8-0.

The Bulldogs were not done. Walks and some hits kept adding points to the board at the top of the third. Quarles, Gard, Holmes, Taylor, Donnell, and Frazier would each have a run, putting the Bulldogs up 14-0.

A Frazier double at the top of the fourth sent Donnell and Taylor home, then a Simpson single sent Frazier across the plate. The game would go to the bottom of the fourth, but the Bulldogs claimed the 17-0 shutout.

Donnell earned the win from the mound, giving up one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out five and walking five.
