The DeKalb West School Bulldogs baseball team suffered their first defeat on the season last week, falling by just one run against White County, but bounced right back with shutouts in the next two games.
On Tuesday, March 19, the Bulldogs were on their home field as they hosted the White County Warriors. White County got on the board first, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Bulldogs would score one run at their first at bat, after Anthony Moore took a base after a HBP. Porter Hancock would later double on a fly to right as Moore scored.
The Warriors scored two more in the second inning, while the Bulldogs would go down with one standing on third.
Once again, White County put points on the board as they came to bat at the top of the third. The Warriors added two more runs, going up 6-2 before DeKalb got off the field.
The Bulldogs would manage one run in the third, with Moore singling on a line drive to right, then coming home after a double ground ball to third by Preston Taylor. The Bulldogs cut the lead 6-2.
The Warriors would not lay down and added one more run at the top of the fourth. It was then that the Bulldogs finally came to life. Collin Donnell took a HBP, then Anderson Fortner hit a single line drive to short. Donnell took third on a wild pitch as Keegan Taylor, running for Fortner, took second. Taylor would then score on another wild pitch as Taylor took third. Elliot Barnes then hit a single line drive to center, sending Taylor home.
Barnes would later make his way to third, and score after Cooper Odom singled on a hard grounder to shortstop. Moore was up next, and hit a double on a fly to center as Odom took third. Moore would then score on yet another wild pitch. By the end of the inning, DWS cut the lead 7-6.
The game would go on to the fifth inning, but neither team would see home plate again. White County took the narrow win.
Reed Midgett pitched three innings in relief, allowing two hits and one run, striking out six and walking one. Preston Taylr took the loss, going two innings, with six runs on four hits, striking out one and walking four.
The following Wednesday, the Bulldogs shut out the Gordonsville Tigers 5-0. Midgett had two runs in the game, while Taylor went two for three at the plate to lead DWS in hits. Odom, Taylor, and Donnell each stole multiple bases in the game. Hancock earned the win from the mound, allowing two hits and zero runs, over four and a third innings, striking out five and walking two. Donnell took the mound in relief.
On Friday, the Bulldogs had a rematch with White County, this time shutting down the Warriors 8-0. DWS score five runs in the second inning, two in the third, and one in the fourth.
Barnes earned the win from the mound, giving up three hits and no runs over five innings, striking out three and walking one.
