The DeKalb West School basketball teams had an easier week than scheduled, playing two out of three scheduled nights. One night of play, against Union Heights, was cancelled due to the other team facing a COVID-19 outbreak.

On Monday, November 8, DWS was on the road, taking on Wilson Elementary. In the girls’ game, the Lady Bulldogs would jump out early and never look back.

Abby Jo Crook was on fire in the first period, scoring four two-point baskets and a free throw. Jordyn Agee had a two-pointer and a free throw, while Autumn Crook had a two-pointer of her own. Wilson was held scoreless.

The Lady Bulldogs piled on the points again in the second period, putting 10 on the scoreboard. Agee had a pair of two-point shots, while Millie Barton and Sophie Desimone each had one. Abby Jo Crook added two more free throws. Wilson got on the board with seven, but DWS commanded a 24-7 lead at the half.

And that is where the score would stay, with neither team able to put points on the board in the second half. The Lady Bulldogs would take the 24-7 win.

The Bulldogs would also have a good night. Nick Murphy had a three-pointer in the first period, while Chase Young had a two-pointer and a free throw. Conner Talley and Ben Barton each had a two-point shot. Wilson came away with nine points, keeping things close.

DWS scored 15 points in the second period, with Ethan Brown getting a pair of two-pointers, and Den Driver getting a three-pointer. Talley added a two-point basket and a pair of free throws, while Young and Murphy each had a two-point shot. Wilson was held to six, with the Bulldogs up 25-15 at the half.

Talley was hot in the third period, scoring a two-point basket and a pair of three-pointers. Young had a couple of two-point shots, while Kolby Slager had one. Wilson was held to seven, with the Bulldogs commanding a 39-22 lead.

The Bulldogs didn’t stop in the fourth, coming away with 12 points. Murphy and Maddux Pyburn each had a three-pointer, with Brown getting a two-pointer and a free throw. J.T. Summers had a two-point shot while Ben Barton added a free throw. Wilson was held to only two points, giving the Bulldogs the 51-24 win.

The following Thursday, the DWS teams were back on their home court as they took on Tuckers Crossroads. In the girls’ game, the Lady Bulldogs would take the early lead, but the game would remain close.

Abby Jo Crook would score the only points for either team in the first period, coming away with a two-point shot. DWS would add four more in the second period, with a two-pointer by Autumn Crook, and free throws by Abby Jo Crook and Millie Barton. The Lady Hornets would surge, getting nine points and taking the lead at the half.

The offense came to life for the Lady Bulldogs in the third period. Jordyn Agee had three two-pointers and a free throw, while Abby Jo Crook, Autumn Crook, Desimone, and Emily Fry each had a two-pointer. Tuckers was held to just two points, with DWS retaking the lead, 21-11.

The Lady Bulldogs were held to just five points in the fourth period, with Fry getting a two-pointer, and Agee getting two free throw points. Autumn Crook had one free throw. Tuckers would surge and come away with 11 points, but it wasn’t enough. DWS took the 26-22 victory.

The Bulldogs would have a tougher game, with the score close throughout. DWS scored four points in the first period, with Young getting a two-pointer and a free throw, while Slager had one free throw points. Tuckers scored seven taking the early lead.

Ben Driver had a two-pointer in the second period, while Brown added a couple of free throws and Porter Hancock added one. The Hornets had six points, taking the 13-9 halftime lead.

Talley had a three-pointer in the third period, while Young and Brown each came away with a two-pointer. Tuckers matched the Bulldogs point for point, keeping a 20-16 lead.

The Bulldogs added five points to the scoreboard in the fourth, with a three-pointer by Murphy and a two-pointer by Young. Tuckers put up 10 points, taking the 30-21 win.
