DCHS Battles Border Rivals at Home

The DCHS basketball teams played two nights in front of the hometown crowd last week, hosting a couple of border rival teams. They would play Cannon County on December 9, then welcome Warren County the following Friday.

In the Lady Tigers’ game against Cannon, DeKalb would hold its own against their border rival and take the game into the fourth period.

The Lady Tigers scored eight points in the first period, with Avery Agee sinking a two and a pair of free throws, while Brooklyn Fuson and Millie Barton each had a two-point basket of their own. Cannon stayed close with six points.

Agee scored on three free throws, while Chloe VanVranken and Allie Melton each got on the board with a two-pointer. Cannon would inch ahead with 10 points, taking the 16-15 lead at halftime.

The Lady Tigers jumped ahead with 11 points in the third period, with VanVranken hitting a three-pointer, a two-pointer, and a pair of free throw points, while Barton added another two-point basket. Agee had two free throw points. Cannon was held to just three, giving DeKalb the 26-19 lead.

Melton hit a three-pointy shot for the Lady Tigers in the fourth while Agee added a free throw point. Unfortunately, Cannon sprang to life, scoring 19 points and taking the 38-30 win.

The Tigers’ game would see the home team come out strong but start to fade as the game wore on. DeKalb scored 14 in the first period, with Jordan Parker hitting a two and three-pointer, while Jon Hendrix added a three-point shot. Logan Duke added a two-point basket, while Dallas Kirby had a two and a pair of free throws. Cannon was held to 12 points.

Hendrix sank a three-pointer for the Tigers in the second, while Porter Hancock added a couple of free throws. Cannon jumped ahead with 16 points and the 28-19 halftime lead.

The Tigers came out strong in the third, with Kirby sinking four two-point shots and a free throw, while Parker had four two-point baskets and one free throw. Seth Fuson got on the board with a free throw point. Cannon scored 18, but still held a 46-39 lead.

Parker hit a three and a couple of twos for DeKalb in the fourth, while Kirby added a two-pointer and three free throws. Fuson and Hancock each had a two-point basket. Cannon ended the game with 22 points and the 68-55 win.

The following Friday, the teams were back on their home hardwood, this time facing tough teams from Warren County. The girls’ game would be a battle right to the end.

The Lady Tigers scored eight in the first period, with Melton sinking a three and two-pointer, while VanVranken hit a two and a free throw. Warren stayed right with them, also scoring eight.

Agee hit a three-point shot in the second period, while VanVranken and Brook Fuson each had a two-pointer. Once again, Warren matched the Lady Tigers points, tying the game 15-15 at the half.

The Lady Tigers came out swinging in the third, scoring 17 points. Melton had a pair of three-pointers, Agee a three a two and a pair of free throws, and Barton and VanVranken each with a two-point basket. Warren was held to five points, giving DeKalb the 32-20 lead.

DeKalb scored eight points in the fourth, with VanVranken hitting a pair of two-pointers, Jordyn Agee with one two-point shot, and Avery Agee with a couple of free throws. Warren made a run, scoring 17 points, but it would not be enough. The Lady Tigers held on for the 40-37 victory.

The Tigers would not be so luck and would fall behind quickly. DeKalb sored nine in the first period, with a couple of threes by Kirby and one by Parker. Warren would plow ahead with 21 points.

DeKalb added 11 to the board in the second, with a three-pointer by Elliott Barnes, four free throws by Hancock, three free throws by Kirby and one by Fuson. Warren added 14, taking the 35-20 lead at the half.

Kirby had a two-pointer and a free throw for the Tigers in the third, while Fuson, Parker, Hendrix, and Hancock each had a two-point basket. Warren was held to 10, but still held a 45-31 lead.

The Tigers ended the game with 13 more points. Parker had a two-pointer and three free throws, Barnes a three-pointer, Chase Young a two-point basket and a free throw, and Hancock a two-pointer. Warren sealed the game with 15, taking the 60-44 win.
