It was another tough week for the Tigers and Lady Tigers basketball teams, playing at home and away,
On Tuesday, January 21, the teams were in front of the hometown crowd as they hosted Livingston Academy. In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers would fall behind early.
DeKalb scored five points in the first period, two-pointers by Chloe VanVranken and Millie Barton, and a free throw by Lillie Young. The Lady Wildcats would put 16 on the board.
Allie Melton, Jordyn Agee, and Avery Agee each had a three-point basket for the Lady Tigers in the second period, while VanVranken added a free throw point. Livingston added 23 to the scoreboard, taking the 39-15 halftime lead.
The Lady Tigers put 10 on the board in the third period, with VanVranken with a pair of twos, Brooke Fuson and Young each with a two-point shot, and Jordyn Agee with a pair of free throw points. The Lady Wildcats kept rolling with 11 points and the 50-25 lead.
DeKalb came away with 10 more points to end the game. Melton and Barton each had a two-point basket, while Avery Agee had a two-pointer and a free throw. VanVranken had a couple of free throw points, while Jerusalem Aldino had one. Livingston was held to eight points, but claimed the 58-35 win.
In the boys’ game, the match would remain tight in the first half, then the Tigers would let things get away in the second.
DeKalb scored seven points in the first period, with a three and two-point basket by Seth Fuson, and a two-point shot by Logan Duke. Livingston would come away with 12 points.
The Tigers turned up the heat in the second period, scoring 17 points. Jon Hendrix got on the board and a three and two-pointer, while Porter Hancock added a pair of two-point shots. Elliott Barnes had a three-point basket, Jordan Parker and Dallas Kirby each had a two-pointer, and Fuson added a free throw. The Wildcats came away with another 12, tying the score at 24 at halftime.
Kirby hit a two and three-point basket for the Tigers in the third period, while Hendrix added a two-pointer and a free throw. Parker had another two-point shot. Livingston put 16 on the board, taking the 40-34 lead.
The Tigers put 21 on the board in the fourth, with Fuson hitting three two-pointers, Parker a pair of twos and three free throws, Kirby with a couple of two-pointers and a free throw, and Hendrix with a three. The Wildcats were held to 20, but it was enough for the 60-55 win.
The following Friday the teams were on the road, this time taking on Stone Memorial. It would be another hard night for both teams.
In the Lady Tigers game, DeKalb was defeated 70-56. The Lady Tigers trailed 17-15 after the first period, and 31-28 at halftime. DeKalb was down 50-39 after the third period before falling 70-56.
Chloe VanVranken scored 18, Allie Melton 15, Camille Barton 9, Brooklyn Fuson 8, and Avery Agee 6.
In the boys’ game, the Tigers fell behind early, only scoring six points in the first period. Kirby hit a two-pointer and a pair of free throws, while Parker added two free throw points himself. The Panthers put 20 on the board.
Fuson hit on a three-point shot for the Tigers in the second, while Kirby had a two-pointer and a couple of free throws. Barnes had three free throw points, and Chase Young had two. Stone Memorial added 24, taking a 44-18 lead at the half.
DeKalb put 17 on the board in the third period, with Jon Hendrix hitting a two and three-pointer and a free throw, while David Wheeler got on the board with a three-pointer. Fuson, Duke, Kirby, and Barnes each had a two-point basket. The Panthers just kept racking up points, putting 30 on the board, and taking a 74-35 lead.
Barnes sank a two-pointer and a pair of free throws, while Duke and Young each had a two and one free throw. Stone was held to five, but claimed the 79-45 win.
The Lady Tigers drop to 5-17 overall, while the Tigers are 8-14. Both teams are 0-5 in district play.
