Despite the snow and cold weather, the DeKalb County High School basketball teams managed to get in a full week of games, hosting Smith County before traveling to meet some tough White County teams.
On Tuesday, January 7, DeKalb was in front of the hometown crowd as they hosted Smith County. The Lady Tigers would have a tough night.
In the Lady Tigers’ game, DeKalb scored nine points in the first period, with Chloe VanVranken hitting a two-pointer and a free throw, while Brooke Fuson, Avery Agee and Lillie Young each sank a two-point basket. The Owlettes jumped out with 20 points.
DeKalb put 13 points on the board in the second period. VanVranken sank a two-pointer, a three-pointer, and a free throw, while Allie Melton got on the board with a three-point shot. Young added a two-point shot, while Avery Agee added a pair of free throws. Smith County steamed ahead with 16 points and the 36-22 halftime lead.
Avery Agee hit a couple of two-pointers for the Lady Tigers in the third, while Young had one. Smith County added 17, taking the 53-28 lead.
DeKalb put 17 on the board in the fourth, with VanVranken hitting a couple of twos and three free throws, while Jordyn Agee added a three-pointer and a free throw point. Avery Agee had a pair of two-point shots, while Melton added one. Smith was held to seven, but took the 60-45 win.
The Tigers would have a better night, though the game would remain close. DeKalb scored 13 in the first period, with Jon Hendrix sinking a two-pointer and three threes, while Seth Fuson hit a two-point shot. The Owls matched them point for point.
DeKalb came away with six points in the second period, with Jordan Parker hitting a two-pointer and a pair of free throws, while Hendrix added another two-point basket. The Owls scored nine, taking the 22-19 lead at the half.
The Tigers got back on track in the third period, scoring nine. Fuson sank a three-point shot, Logan Duke a two-pointer, and Dallas Kirby got on the board with a pair of free throws. Parker and Elliott Barnes each had one free throw point. Smith County was held to six, tying the score at 28.
Parker seemingly couldn’t miss in the fourth period. He sank a two-point shot and 12 free throws out of 14. Kirby added a three-point basket, a two-pointer, and three free throws. The Owls were held to 15 giving DeKalb the 50-43 victory.
The following Thursday, the teams were back in action, this time traveling to White County. The games had been moved up one day due to snowy weather moving in.
The Lady Tigers were dominated by the Warriorettes 67-22. DeKalb County trailed 20-4 after the first period and 41-10 at halftime. In the third, the Lady Tigers were down 58-20 then fell 67-22 to end the game.
Brooklyn Fuson and Allie Melton each scored five points, Avery Agee and Camille Barton each scored four, Lillie Young two and Jordyn Agee and Chloe VanVranken each with one.
In the Tigers game, DeKalb scored 11 points in the first period. Kirby hit a pair of two-point baskets, while Parker, Hendrix, and Duke each had one two-pointer. The Warriors were held to 10.
DeKalb scored 10 in the second period, with Parker hitting a two and three-point basket, Barnes a three-pointer, and Fuson a two-point shot. White was held to nine, giving the Tigers the 21-19 halftime lead.
Kirby sank a two-pointer and three free throws for the Tigers in the third, while Hendrix had a three-point shot and one free throw. Barnes had a three-pointer, Fuson a two-pointer, and Duke a free throw. White came away with 24, taking the 43-36 lead.
The Tigers ended the game with 10 points. Parker sank a three-point basket and a free throw, while Fuson and Barnes each had a three-point shot. The Warriors scored 14, taking the 57-46 win.
