DeKalb West Bulldogs Unstoppable
Baseball

The DeKalb West School Bulldogs baseball team continued their dominating season last week with three more victories. The team claimed a two-game series with Avery Trace, then went on to destroy Southside on Friday.

On Tuesday, April 23, the Bulldogs were on the road in Cookeville to face Avery Trace. The Bulldogs took the early lead and held on in the fifth for the win.

The Bulldogs got on the board first, striking at the top of the second inning. Reed Midgett got a walk, followed by Elliot Barnes with a single fly to center. Midgett would get caught at third as Carson Davis grounded to fielder’s choice at the pitcher, then Andrew Cathey reached on a ground ball and an error at short, followed by Cooper Odom with a single line drive to center, sending Barnes home.

Anthony Moore hit a hard grounder and reached on an error at second base, as Odom scored, and before Avery got off the field, DWS was up 4-0.

They would repeat at the top of the third with four more runs. After a single by Barnes, Donnell reached on an error at short. Carson Davis then singled on a ground ball to short as Barnes crossed the plate, then Donnell would steal home as Cathey was back at the plate. Cathey would end up walking, followed by a single line drive to center by Odom.

Preston Taylor would single on a grounder to short as Davis scored, then Porter Hancock got a walk, sending Cathey across the plate. The Bulldogs were up 8-0.

The game would go to the bottom of the fifth, where Avery Trace made a late-game rally, but it would not be enough. DWS held on to claim the 8-4 victory.

Preston Taylor earned the win from the mound, allowing two hits and zero runs over three and two-third innings, striking out three and walking four. Donnell came in relief.

The following Thursday, the Bulldogs were back on home ground, this time hosting Avery Trace. It would be another win for the Bulldogs.

Avery Trace got on the board first, scoring one run at the top of the first inning.

The Bulldogs claimed the lead at their first at bat, after a single fly to right by Moore, then a walk by Taylor. Moore would later score on an error at third while Midgett was up to bat, then Midgett singled on a line drive to left as Taylor scored. DWS was up 2-1.

DeKalb would extend their lead at the bottom of the fourth. Odom, Taylor and Hancock each got a walk, and later Barnes singled on a line drive to center, as Odom and Taylor each crossed the plate. DWS was up 4-1.

Avery Trace scored one more run at the top of the fourth, but that would be as far as they would reach. The game would go to the fifth and the Bulldogs claimed the 4-2 win. Barnes took the win from the mound, giving up one hit and one run over three innings, striking out three and walking none. Midgett collected the save.

The following day, the Bulldogs were back on their homefield, this time welcoming the Southside Saints. It would be another good game for DeKalb.

The Bulldogs struck first in the first inning with a RBI single by Hancock as Taylor scored, then a double by Midgett as Gavin Frazier, running for Hancock, scored.

The Saints would score one run at the top of the second, but the Bulldogs would add some distance as they came to bat in the third. After a single by Taylor and a double by Hancock, Midgett hit a double line drive to left as Taylor and Frazier scored. Barnes was up next and double on a fly ball to center, sending Midgett home. DWS was on top 5-1.

The Bulldogs would seal the game closed at the bottom of the fourth, with a RBI double for Moore, a RBI double for Taylor, and a RBI single for Hancock. With bases loaded, Keegan Taylor got a walk sending Frazier home, Frazier would later fly out to right allowing Midgett to score after tagging up, and a single by Logan Gard sent Barnes home. The Bulldogs were up 11-1.

Southside would score one more at the top of the fifth, but the Bulldogs would take the 11-2 win.

Moore earned the win for the Bulldogs from the mound, allowing one hit and one run over two innings, striking out three and walking three. Hancock and Donnell each appeared in relief.

The Bulldogs are currently 15-2 on the season.
