The DeKalb West School Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs ended their regular season last week, with the Bulldogs moving on the play in the James C. Haile Tournament later in the week.
On Thursday, January 16, the teams were on the road as they took on Tuckers Crossroads. The girls would fall in a close one, while the boys would dominate.
In the Lady Bulldogs game, DWS scored five points in the first period. Katelyn Fry and Katie Jo Bowman would each sink a two-point basket while Kaylee Womack added a free throw. Tuckers came away with three points.
Womack would score the lone point for DeKalb in the second period, a free throw, while Tuckers added four, taking the 7-6 lead at the half.
It was Womack again in the third period, sinking a three-point shot. Tuckers scored four, taking the 11-9 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs scored seven in the fourth, with Womack, Fry, and Shayla Robertus each with a two-pointer and Eden Donnell with a free throw. Tuckers scored eight, taking the 19-16 win.
The Bulldogs would have a much better game. DeKalb scored 15 in the first period, with Levi Cripps sinking a three-pointer and a two-pointer, while Edgar Garza had a pair of two-point shots. Jackson Dunaway also hit a three-point basket. Tuckers was held scoreless.
DWS added five in the second period, with Bentley Watley hitting a three and Levi Reynold sinking a two-pointer. Tuckers got on the board with one point, giving the Bulldogs the 20-1 halftime lead.
Levi Cripps had another three-pointer in the third, while Garza had another two-pointer. Tuckers scored six. The Bulldogs were up, 25-7.
The Bulldogs ended the game with 10 more points. Dunaway and Watley each had a three-pointer, while Levi Cripps had a pair of free throws. Kaden Mullinax and Grady Thomason each had a free throw. Tuckers scored three, giving the Bulldogs the 35-10 victory.
The following Friday, the Bulldogs moved on to the first round of the James C. Haile Tournament. They would face off against Hillham and dominated through most of the game.
The Bulldogs scored seven in the first period, with Levi Cripps sinking a two and three-point basket. Lucas Nokes added a two-pointer. Hillham was held to just two.
DWS scored 13 in the second period, with Cripps sinking three two-pointers, Landon Holmes with two, and Garza with a two and a free throw. Hillham scored three giving the Bulldogs the 20-5 lead at the half.
Cripps hit another two and three-point basket for the Bulldogs in the third, while Garza added a pair of two-pointers, and Holmes one. Hillham scored six, with DWS up 31-11.
The Bulldogs ended the game with another 11 points. Garza had a pair of two-point shots, Maddux Pyburn a three-pointer, and Cripps and Holmes each with a two-point basket. Hillham was held to five, giving DWS the 42-16 victory.
The Bulldogs moved on to the next round the following Monday.
