The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were back in action last week, hosting Prescott for a Wednesday home game. The games had originally been scheduled for the previous Monday, but were rescheduled for Wednesday, January 8.
In the Lady Saints’ game, the girls struggled against a tough Prescott team. DMS scored just two points in the first period, on a two-pointer by Taylynn Taylor. Prescott would steamroll to 20 points.
Taylor hit a two-pointer again in the second period, but unfortunately that would be all the points DMS would see. Prescott kept pulling away with 11 points, taking the 31-4 halftime lead.
The Lady Saints finally got moving in the third period, scoring nine points. Aubree Fuson sank a pair of two-pointers and a free throw, while Hannah Tobitt had a couple of two-point shots of her own. Prescott was held to seven points, but still commanded a 38-13 lead.
DMS was held off the board in the fourth period, while Prescott added 11, taking the 49-13 win.
The Saints would have a much better night. DeKalb scored 12 in the first period, with Reed Midgett sinking three two-point baskets, while Auston Parker and Hayden Quarles each had a three-pointer. Prescott was held to just seven points.
DMS added nine to the board in the second period, with Quarles hitting three three-point shots. Prescott was again held to seven, giving the Saints the 21-14 lead at the half.
Midgett would score the only points for the Saints in the third, with a two-point shot. Prescott would get four, with DMS still holding a 23-18 lead.
The Saints ended the game with eight more points. Midgett had a couple of two-point baskets, while Quarles had one. Parker and Skylar Herriott each had a free throw point. Prescott was held to four, giving DeKalb the 31-22 victory.
On Thursday, the teams were on the road, this time facing off against Algood.
In the Saints’ game, Reed Midgett scored two points for DeKalb in the first period with a couple of free throws. Algood scored three.
Hayden Quarles sank a three-point basket for DMS in the second period, while Gavin Frazier had a two-point shot. Algood got rolling with 13 points and the 16-7 halftime lead.
The Saints scored 11 in the third period, with Quarles hitting a three and a free throw, Auston Parker a three-pointer, Skylar Herriott a two-point shot, and Midgett with two-pointer and a free throw. Algood scored 11 as well, up 27-18.
DeKalb ended the game with 10 more points. Quarles had a three-pointer and a free throw, Parker a three-point shot, Herriott a two-pointer, and Midgett a free throw. Algood scored eight, taking the 45-28 win.
