DMS Faces Tough Teams on the Court

The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints and Saints were back on the court last week, playing some tough teams on the road and at home.

On Tuesday, November 12, the ladies were on the road to the far away land of Cumberland County where they faced off against Stone Memorial. The Lady Saints would fall behind early and never catch up.

DMS scored just four points in the first period, with two-point baskets by Emmaline Hendrix and Zoie Ashburn. Stone pulled away fast with 23 points.

Hendrix had a two-pointer and a free throw for the Lady Saints in the second period, while Ashburn added a two-point shot and Aubree Fuson had a free-throw point. Stone also had six points, claiming a 29-10 lead at halftime.

It was all Fuson for DMS in the third with a pair of two-point shots. Stone continued to pull away with 13 points and a 42-14 lead.

Mekazya Waggoner hit a two-pointer for DeKalb in the fourth while Hailey Moore and Ashburn each added a free throw. Stone sealed the game up with three more points, taking a 45-18 win.

In the boys game, the Saints would have a much closer game. The Saints scored eight points in the first period, with a two and three-pointer by Hayden Quarles, a two-point shot by Gavin Frazier and a free throw by Reed Midgett. Stone Memorial stayed right with them with eight points of their own.

The Saints came away with 12 points in the second period, with another two and three by Quarles, a two-pointer and free throw by Skyler Herriott, a two-point shot by Frazier, and a pair of free throws by Brantley Brooks. Stone was held to just six points, giving DMS the 20-14 lead at the half.

Midgett added three two-point baskets for the Saints in the third period, while Keegan Taylor had a three-pointer. Frazier and Herriott each had a two-point shot, while Auston Parker added a couple of free throws. Stone chipped at the lead with 18 points. The Saints held a 35-32 lead.

The Saints came out of the fourth period with nine points added to the board. Parker had a pair of two-point shots and a couple of free throws, while Frazier had a two and a pair of free throws. Quarles added two free throw points. Unfortunately, Stone wanted it just a little more, scoring 13 points and claiming the narrow 45-44 victory.

On Thursday, the teams were back on their home court, as they took on fast Avery Trace teams. It would be another tough night for DMS.

The Lady Saints scored five points in the first period, with a two-point basket and a free throw by Ashburn and a two-point shot by Fuson. Avery Trace would inch ahead with seven points.

DMS was held to just two points in the second period. The girls took their shots, but just could get into the basket. Ashburn came away with the lone two-pointer, while Avery Trace scored 10. They held a 17-7 lead at halftime.

Ashburn had a two-point basket in the third, while Hendrix added a free throw. The Lady Saints actually came away with five points in the period, after an Avery Trace player accidentally shot a two-pointer into DeKalb’s goal. Avery Trace added seven to their tally, going up 24-12.

Fuson ended the scoring for the Lady Saints with a two-pointer and a free throw, while Avery Trace added 14 to the board, taking the 38-15 win.

In the boys game, the Saints came out of the first period with nine points. Quarles had a three-pointer, Midgett a two-pointer, and Frazier a two-point basket and a couple of free throws. Avery Trace put 11 on the board.

The Saints were held scoreless in the second period, while Avery added 11 more points. The Saints were behind, 22-9 at the half.

DMS finally got back on track in the third period, with Taylor and Quarles each with a three-pointer, and Frazier with a two-pointer. Avery was held to jus seven points, but still commanded a 29-17 lead.

The Saints came away with eight more points in the fourth, far less than they needed. Taylor had a three-pointer, Midgett a two and a free throw, and Brooks a two-point basket. Avery Trace added 10 to the scoreboard and took the 39-25 win.
