The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were back in action last week, taking on Upperman at home on Thursday, before traveling to Warren County the following day for a day game.
In the Lady Saints game against Upperman, the Lady Saints would keep pace in the first period, but let it slip away in the second.
The Lady Saints scored 10 points in the first period, with Taylenn Taylor hitting a pair of two-point shots and a free throw, while Zoie Ashburn sank a three-pointer. Hannah Tobitt had a two-point basket. Upperman was held to just nine points.
Ezraya Gingerich sank a couple of two-point shots for the Lady Saints in the second period, but that would be the only points they would see. Upperman ramped up 31 points to take the 40-14 halftime lead.
Ashburn had a two and a three-pointer for DeKalb in the third, while Mekazya Waggoner added a two-pointer. Upperman kept pulling away, with 15 more points and the 55-21 lead.
Tobitt sank a pair of two-point baskets in the fourth, but that was all DeKalb could muster. Upperman sealed the game with 19 more points and the 74-25 win.
The Saints would have a much closer game and battle right into the fourth period.
DMS scored 11 points in the first period, with a three-point basket and a free throw by Hayden Quarles, a three by Keegan Taylor, a two-pointer by Auston Parker, and a pair of free throws by Reed Midgett. Upperman matched the Saints point for point.
Taylor sank a three-pointer, Skylar Herriott had a two-point shot, and Brantley Brooks sank a free throw for the Saints in the second period. Upperman scored seven, taking the narrow 18-17 halftime lead.
The Saints got back on top in the third scoring 13 points. Taylor hit on a pair of threes, Quarles had one three-pointer, and Herriott and Midgett each had a two-pointer. Upperman was held to nine, giving DMS the 30-27 lead.
It would be a battle in the fourth. Quarles sank a three-point basket, while Herriott had three free throw points. Midgett also had a free throw shot. Upperman would bounce back, scoring 14 and taking the 41-37 win.
The following day, the teams would be on the road, this time taking on Warren County. It would be another battle for the Lady Saints while the Saints would come out on top.
In the Lady Saints’ game, the girls would score four in the first period with Tobitt and Ashburn each sinking a two-point basket. Warren would come away with seven points.
Ashburn would sink three free throws for the Lady Saints in the second, while Tobitt added another two-point shot. Warren piled on another 13 points and were up 20-9 at the half.
Aubree Fuson put five points on the board for the Lady Saints in the third, with a two, and three free throws, while Taylor added a two-pointer and a free throw of her own. Warren put eight on the board and took the 28-17 lead.
Emmaline Hendrix, Tobitt, and Ashburn each sank a two-pointer for DMS in the fourth, but it was far from what was needed. Warren added nine and claimed the 37-23 win.
The Saints would have a better outing, jumping out with a big lead. DMS put 15 on the board in the first period, with a pair of threes by Quarles, a pair of twos by Parker, a two-pointer and a free throw by Midgett and a two by Gavin Frazier. Warren was held to 10.
The Saints kept up the pressure in the second period with 10 more points. Keegan Taylor sank a three-point shot, Herriott had a pair of twos and a free throw, and Frazier had a two-point basket. Warren was held to five, giving DMS the 25-15 halftime lead.
Midgett caught fire in the third, with three two-pointers and a free throw, while Brooks hit a two and a free throw. Taylor and Frazier each had a two-pointer, and Quarles added a pair of free throws. Warren scored seven, giving the Saints the 41-22 lead.
Herriott hit a two and a free throw for the Saints in the fourth, while Taylor, Midgett, and Frazier each had a two-pointer. Warren was held to six, giving DeKalb the 50-28 victory.
