DMS Lady Saints struggle on road
Softball

The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints softball team was back in action last week, playing a couple of dates on the road, before getting in a home game.

On Monday, March 10, the girls traveled to Warren County where they faced off with the Warren County Lady Pioneers.

The Pioneers would have a strong showing, scoring one run at the bottom of the first, three more at the bottom of the second, and another three at the bottom of the third. The game would go to the top of the fifth, where Warren would shut the Lady Saints down and claim the 7-0 shutout.

Kennedy Odom took the loss for DeKalb, going four innings, surrendering seven runs on five hits, striking out three and walking three.

In JV play, the Lady Saints would best the Lady Pioneers 6-1, with all of DeKalb’s runs coming at the top of the second inning. Alexis Graham singled on a grounder to short, followed by a single to second by Kyra Johnson.  Aubrie Harden singled on a ground ball to third, but Graham would get caught in the play. Mekazya Waggoner would then load the bases with a grounder to short, followed by a walk for Emmaline Hendrix, sending Johnson home.

Hillary Walker would reach on a ground ball and an error by center field, as Harden scored, and later Zoie Ashburn singled on a line drive to second as Waggoner and Hendrix each touched home plate. Presley Harrington would then triple on a line drive to right, as Walker and Ashburn scored.

The Lady Pioneers would manage one run at the bottom of the fourth, but that would be all they could muster. DeKalb claimed the 6-1 victory.

Harrington earned the win for the Lady Saints, allowing two hits and one run over three and two-third innings, striking out four and walking four.

The following day, the Lady Saints were back on the field, this time in Cookeville to take on Prescott South. The Lady Saints would get on the board first at the top of the first, but watched as the game slipped away as it went on.

After Hailey Moore reached on a grounder and error at third, Paizlee Taylor would later single on a line drive to right, sending Moore home.

Prescott would score two runs at their first at bat, then one more at the bottom of the second.

Fuson would hit a triple for the Lady Saints at the top of the fourth, then score on an error by second for a home run. Unfortunately, that would be the last point DeKalb would see.

Prescott scored eight at their turn at bat, and would keep DeKalb off the board in the fifth to claim the 11-2 win.

Odom took the loss from the circle, going four innings, allowing 11 runs on six hits, striking out five and walking none.

In the JV game, Ashburn tripled on a line drive to right, and scored on an error at the top of the first inning. The two-inning game would end with DMS taking the 1-0 win.

On Thursday, March 13, the girls were on their home field as they welcomed South Cumberland. The Lady Saints took a big lead early and never looked back.

DMS scored two runs in the first inning, after a Kennedy Odom to right, a Paizlee Taylor double to left as Odom scored, and a hard grounder and an error at short by Fuson as Taylor scored.

The Lady Saints would add 11 more runs in the second inning, with two runs by Cora Cox, Hannah Tobitt, and Presley Harrington, and one run each by Carleigh Tramel, Zoie Ashburn, Paizlee Taylor, Kennedy Odom, and Aubree Fuson.

South Cumberland would avoid the shutout with one run at the top of the third, but the Lady Saints claimed the 13-1 victory.
