It’s hard to believe, but basketball season is already upon us in DeKalb County. The DeKalb Middle School Saints and Lady Saints opened up their season last Tuesday evening, hosting some tough Smith County teams. The girls would have a tough night, while the boys came away victorious.

In the Lady Saints game, The Lady Owls came out on fire scoring 15 points in the first period. DeKalb would only put two points on the board, both on free throw shots by Jordyn Agee.

Smith County would be held to only four in the second period, while the Lady Saints added five to the board. Once again, it was Agee with a three-point basket and a two-pointer.

The Lady Owls continued to pull away after halftime, scoring 14 points in the third period. DMS scored six with a two-pointer and a free throw by Agee and a free throw shot by Olivia Derrick. Smith was up 33-13.

The Lady Saints would put nine more points on the board before the game would come to a close. Agee had another two-point basket and a free throw, while Brooke Fuson came away with three two-point shots. It wouldn’t be enough though with the Lady Owls scoring eight and taking the 41-22 win.

The Saints would have a much better outcome. J.T. Summers came out with a pair of two-pointers in the first period, with Luke Johnson getting one. The Owls were held to only two points.

The scoreboard lit up for the Saints in the second period, with the team putting 18 on the board. Elliot Barnes had four free throw points and a couple of two-point shots, while Ryan Lyons had a pair of two-pointers and one free throw basket. Summers and Kiece Hannah each had a two-pointer, while Johnson added a free throw. Smith was held to 10 points giving DeKalb a 24-12 lead at the half.

The Saints continued to dominate in the third period, with Hannah sinking four two-pointers and Barnes hitting a three-point shot. Lyons and Summers each added a two-pointer. The Owls here held to 11 points giving DMS a 39-23 lead.

With the game well in hand, the Saints put up six points in the fourth. Lyons had a pair of two-point baskets while Hannah had one. Smith came away with 10 points, far less than what they needed. DeKalb claimed the 45-33 victory.

With school on break this week, DMS doesn’t return to the court until Tuesday, October 25, when they host visiting White County. JV starts at 4:30 pm, with varsity beginning at 6:00 pm.
