The DeKalb West School basketball teams were back in action last week, hosting Eighth Grade Night and playing some of their final games of the season.
On Monday, January 10, the teams were on their home court for Eighth Grade Night, while taking on teams from Wilson. The Lady Bulldogs would open up the night with a good old blowout.
The Lady Bulldogs scored nine points in the first period, with Jordyn Agee sinking a three-pointer, while Abby Jo Crook hit a two-pointer and a free throw. McKenna Miller also had a two-point basket, while Chaylea Lunsford had a free throw. Wilson was held to just two points.
DeKalb West caught fire in the second period, scoring 20 points. Crook had three two-point shots, while Agee added a couple of two-pointers and a free throw. Miller had two two-point shots, Sophie Desimone added a two-pointer and a free throw, and Autumn Crook had a free throw point. Wilson was held scoreless, giving DWS a 29-2 halftime lead.
Miller came away with three two-point baskets in the third period, while Abby Jo Crook, Millie Barton, and Lunsford each had one. Again, Wilson was held scoreless, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 41-2 lead.
Zoey Skeen scored the only two-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth period, but it was more than enough. Once again, Wilson was held off the board, giving DeKalb the 43-2 victory.
Between the girls’ and boys’ games, DeKalb West honored its eighth graders, recognizing them for their achievements. Those recognized were Caitlin Shoemake, daughter of Ashley Shoemake-Duncan and Brent Duncan, McKenna Miller, daughter of Christen and Charles Cox and David and Casey Miller, Chaylea Lunsford, daughter of Christy and David Lunsford, Nick Murphy, son of Jay and Pam Gohs, Kolby Slager, son of Wesley and Valerie Slager, Conner Talley, son of Brad Talley and Carrie Ogletree, and Cameron Stanley, son of Lucas and Ashley Stanley.
During the Bulldogs’ game, DWS continued to dominate. The boys scored seven points in the first period, with Nick Murphy sinking a pair of three-pointers, while Conner Talley added a free throw. Wilson came away with three points.
The Bulldogs would only claim two points in the second period, with Chase Young and Ethan Brown each sinking a free throw. Wilson managed three more points, giving DeKalb a 9-6 lead at the half.
Young sank three two-point shots for the Bulldogs in the third period, while Talley had one. Kolby Slager and Presley Merriman each had a free throw. Wilson was held to five points. DWS was up, 19-11.
Murphy hit another three-point basket in the fourth, with Slager and Young each getting a two-pointer. Wilson was held to three, giving the Bulldogs a 26-14 win.
On Friday the teams were back on their home court, this time taking on Auburntown.
In the Lady Bulldogs’ game, things started off slow for both teams. Abby Jo crook and McKenna Miller each scored a two-point basket for DWS. Auburntown also scored four points.
Jordyn Agee got things going for the Lady Bulldogs in the second period, scoring three two-point shots and a free throw, while Miller added another two-pointer. Auburntown was held to just two points, giving DWS a 13-6 halftime lead.
The Lady Bulldogs added seven points to the board in the third period, with Miller and Sophie Desimone each hitting a two-pointer, Agee had a pair of free throws and Abby Jo Crook had one. Auburntown was held scoreless, increasing DeKalb’s lead, 20-6.
Chaylea Lunsford had a two-point basket for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth period, while Agee added a couple of free throw points. Auburntown was held to just two points, giving DWS the 24-8 win.
The Bulldogs would have a much tougher game, with it all being decided in the fourth period. DWS scored 11 points to start the game, with Nick Murphy hitting a three-pointer, and Conner Talley, Kolby Slager, Chase Young, and Ethan Brown each hitting a two-pointer. Auburntown came away with six points.
DWS added 10 more points to the board in the second, with Murphy sinking two three-point shots, while Brown and Talley each had a two-pointer. Auburntown came roaring back, adding 16 points and taking a 22-21 lead at halftime.
Talley came up big for the Bulldogs in the third period, hitting a couple of three-pointers and a two-point shot, while Young added another two-pointer. Auburntown was held to six points, giving the Bulldogs back the lead, 31-28.
It would be a battle in the fourth. Again, Talley came up big, scoring a three-pointer, a two-pointer, and a free throw, while Young again sank a two-point shot. Murphy also added a free throw. Auburntown was held to eight points, giving the Bulldogs the 40-36 victory.
