The DeKalb West School basketball teams got in a few games last week, playing on both Monday and Tuesday night. Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs would come out on top in the first series of games.

On Monday, January 6, the Lady Bulldogs were in front of the hometown crowd as the welcomes the Tennessee Heat girls’ team. DWS would score nine points in the first period, with Kaylee Womack sinking a two-point shot and a free throw, while Katelyn Fry, Katie Jo Bowman, and Taelyn Cork each had a two-pointer. The Heat was held to just three.

The Lady Bulldogs only managed two points in the second period, with a pair of free throws by Womack. The Heat was held to two points, giving DWS the 11-5 lead at the half.

Womack hit a two-pointer and a free throw for the Lady Bulldogs in the third period, while the Heat also scored three. DeKalb was still on top, 14-8.

The Lady Bulldogs came away with nine points to end the game. Womack sank a three-point shot and a pair of twos, while Cork also had a two-point basket. The Heat scored four, giving DWS the 23-12 win.

In the Bulldogs’ game, DeKalb would come out on top as they took on the Tennessee Heat. DWS scored eight points in the first period, with Levi Cripps sinking a three-pointer and a two-point shot, while Lucas Nokes had a two-pointer and a free throw. The Heat was held to five points.

DeKalb came away with five points in the second period, with Cripps hitting a two-point basket and Maddux Pyburn hitting a three. The Heat had three points, giving the Bulldogs the 13-8 halftime lead.

The Heat got hot in the third period, scoring 11 points. But the Bulldogs kept up the pressure adding 12 to the board. Cripps and Landon Holmes each hit a pair of two-pointers, Pyburn a three-pointer, and Kaden Mullinax had a free throw. The Bulldogs held a 25-21 lead.

The Bulldogs ended the game with nine more points. Edgar Garza sank a pair of two-point baskets, while Holmes and Nokes each had a two-point shot. Cripps added a free throw point. The Heat was held to seven, giving DeKalb the 34-28 victory.

The following night the teams were back in action, this time taking on tough teams from Forks River. In the Lady Bulldogs’ game, the girls would score only one point in the first period, and free throw by Womack. Forks River came away with four points.

Bowman hit a three-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs in the second period, but Forks River increased their lead with 13. They held a 17-4 halftime lead.

Womack sank a three-point shot for DeKalb in the third period. Forks River scored five, taking the 22-7 lead.

Womack and Fry each had a two-point basket for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth period. Forks River scored five and claimed the 27-11 win.

The Bulldogs would have a better night. DWS put 17 on the board in the first period, with Pyburn sinking a three-point shot and a couple of two-pointers, while Cripps had a three-pointer and a pair of free throws. Holmes added a three-point basket, while Garza hit a two-point shot. Forks River was held to just four.

DeKalb scored two in the second, with a two-point basket by Holmes. Forks River closed the gap with nine points, but the Bulldogs were up 19-13 at halftime.

Cripps sank a three-point basket and a two-pointer for the Bulldogs in the third, while Pyburn and Holmes each had a two-pointer. Forks River scored two, giving DeKalb the 28-15 lead.

The Bulldogs ended the game with six points, a pair of twos by Cripps and one by Pyburn. Forks River scored 12, but it was not enough. DWS claimed the 34-28 victory.
