The DeKalb West School boys basketball team played two games last week, coming away with a loss and a win.
On Nov. 12 the Bulldogs were at home as they faced Carroll-Oakland in a close match.
The game stayed close right from the very beginning. The Bulldogs came away with nine points in the first quarter, with Ethan Martin getting two three-pointers and Jessie Smith getting one. Carroll-Oakland stayed right with the Bulldogs however, taking a one-point lead at the end of the first, 10-9.
Carroll-Oakland pulled away in the second quarter, scoring 14 points to DeKalb West’s nine. Paxton Butler  and Grayson Redmon each had a three-point shot while Brady Driver got a two-pointer. But, Carroll-Oakland commanded the lead, 24-18.
The Bulldogs’ defensive game stepped up in the third quarter, keeping Carroll-Oakland out of the hoop. DeKalb West came away with five points, with Butler and Jacob Frazier each getting two-point shots. The Bulldogs had closed the gap with a score of DWS 23 – Carroll-Oakland 24.
DWS only scored four points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer by Butler. But it wasn’t enough. Carroll-Oakland came away with 10 points, six fromfree throws. Carroll-Oakland would get the win, 34-27.
Martin and Smith went one for two on free throws, while Driver was one for three.
On Nov. 14 the Bulldogs were on the road to take on Providence in what would turn out to be a big victory for DeKalb West.
The Bulldogs took the early lead in the game, scoring seven points in the first quarter, including two-point shots by Ethan Martin and Jessie Smith. Providence would only get four points.
In the second quarter DeKalb West expanded their lead, scoring 13 points mostly from shots made by Damien Dishman. He had four two-pointers while Grayson Redmon got a three-point shot. Providence only came away with three points in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs had a 20-7 lead.
The third quarter saw Providence inch closer, scoring seven points to the Bulldogs’ two. Brady Driver had the only two-point shot in the quarter, but DWS still commanded a 22-14 lead.
The Bulldogs turned it up in the third quarter, scoring 12 points to Providence’s eight. Dishman had two two-pointers while Driver came away with three. Ethan Martin had one two-point shot. The Bulldogs took the win, 34-22.
Dishman went two for five on free throws, while Driver went three for eight. Smith was zero for one, and Butler was zero for two.
