First win of the season
Tigers 1

The DeKalb County Tigers baseball team were on the diamond last week, going on the road before playing in front of the hometown crowd. The team managed to get its first win of the season before going to Wilson County for tournament play.

On Monday, March 17, the Tigers traveled to Sparta to face off against a tough Warriors team. White County would go up big in the first inning and never look back.

The Warriors scored six runs at the bottom of the first, and would top off their tally at the bottom of the third with one more.

DeKalb wouldn’t even get on the board until the top of the sixth after a double line drive to left by Dallas Kirby. Tucker Webb would next single on a line drive to center, driving Kirby home. It would be the last run the Tigers would see.

The game would go on to the top of the seventh, but the Warriors would hang on for the 7-1 win. Evan Prichard would surrender seven hits and seven runs over six innings, striking out five and walking four.

The following day, the Tigers were back on their home field as they hosted the Warriors. It would be a much closer game.

White County got on the board first, scoring one run at the top of the first, another in the second, and two at the top of the third.

The Tigers would finally get moving as they came to bat in the third.  Kollin Young singled on a line drive to left, and later Ben Driver singled on a bunt to third. Ty Webb would then single on a hard grounder to left field, followed by Kirby singling on a line drive to center as Cooper Odom, running for Webb, touched home plate.

Tucker Webb sacrificed on a fly to right, but Driver would come home, then Evan Prichard homered on a fly to right, with Webb and Kirby scoring. DeKalb had taken the 5-4 lead.

The game would go on to the top of the fifth, where the Warriors tied the game with another run, but the Tigers would pull back ahead at their next at bats. Ty Webb got a walk, followed by a walk by Kirby. Tucker Webb would then sacrifice to the pitcher as his brother took third and Kirby second. Prichard was intentionally walked, loading the bases, but Webb would score on a wild pitch as Andrew Dakas was up to bat. The Tigers were back on top, 6-5.

The game would go on to the top of the seventh, but the Tigers would hang on for the 6-5 win. Luke Johnson earned the win from the mound, surrendering three hits and one run over four innings, striking out four and walking zero. Preston Taylor started the game allowing two hits and four runs over two and one-third innings, striking out none and walking four.

On Friday, the Tigers traveled to Wilson County to take part in the Wilson County Invitational. Their first game would be against Rockvale.  The game would remain close until late.

The Tigers would get on the board first in the first inning. After a triple fly to center by Kirby, Tucker Webb took a base with an HBP. Prichard would get a walk, then a balk by the pitcher gave Kirby an easy trip to home.

Rockvale would also score in the first, but the Tigers would retake the lead in the second on some wild pitching. After a walk for Preston Taylor and Dakas, Taylor scored on a wild pitch as Ty Webb was up to the plate.  DeKalb was up, 2-1.

Rockvale would not go away, and matched the Tigers’ score as they came to bat.

DeKalb added another run in the third, after Tucker Webb got a walk and Prichard took an HBP. Luke Johnson was out on a foul tip, then Silas Kirksey sacrificed on a fly to right as Webb scored. DeKalb reclaimed the lead, 3-2.

The Tigers would go up even bigger at the top of the fourth. Duke would lead off with a walk, then Dakas sacrificed to the pitcher as Duke took second. Ty Webb got a walk, then Kirby grounded out to second as Duke scored. Tucker Webb would get a walk and a balk by the pitcher sent Morgan Smithson, running for Ty Webb, home. The Tigers were up 5-2.

Rockvale would not lay down and would come back and score four at the bottom of the fourth, and five more at the bottom of the fifth.

The Tigers came to bat at the top of the sixth and Kirby would score one run, but that would be all DeKalb could muster. Rockvale claimed the 11-6 win.

Later that day, the Tigers would take on Green Hill in a very rough game. Green Hill scored two in the bottom of the first inning, one in the second, and 15 in the third. Dakas scored a run for the Tigers in the third, avoiding the shutout, but Green Hill would take the 18-1 win.

Things would not be any better the following day as the Tigers returned to the tournament, this time taking on Station Camp. The Tigers took the early lead, scoring two runs at the top of the first, but Station Camp matched them run for run.

DeKalb scored two more in the second, but Station Camp would pull away after that, scoring seven in the second, six in the third, and six in the fourth, taking the 21-4 win.
