The DeKalb County Tiger baseball camp was held this past week, teaching young players the basics of the game
“It’s important to have something like this so kids at a young age can learn the basic skills of the game and have a good time,” said head baseball coach Adam Kefauver of the camp, that was held at the high school baseball field with the help of several Tiger baseball players.
The coach said drills were held to hone the skills of the young players, teaching them techniques in the field and at the plate.
“We do all the skills in baseball, anywhere from catching and throwing to a lot of defensive drills like ground balls and fly balls,” the coach said. “And, we do all the hitting drills.”
The hitting drills included batting practice with the coach pitching from behind a pitching net. Members of the Tiger squad then used wiffle balls and small training balls to help campers focus on contact in hitting.
Along with teaching the basic skills, Kefauver said the camp will also be beneficial to players who may want to join the Tiger baseball team once they get to high school.
“We try to teach the younger guys the terminology,” the coach noted, adding the instruction gives them a leg up once they reach the high school.
In the end, Kefauver said the campers all have a good time and get good exercise outdoors. This year’s group included about 30 campers who drilled and played every day up until 1 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
While this year is in the books, Kefauver pointed out he will do the same thing next June.
“I look forward to having your son or daughter come out and participate next June,” he added.
